Okay so my names Nathan and I live in Newport wales, im 6ft2 and currently weight 258 pounds, im very over weight and things need to change. I figured writing a thread about how im finding weight loss and fitness might help encourage me via feedback and a general place to vent any my frustrations when not doing so well. Also any help and input from people in my situation would be a great help. So im starting tomorrow, healthy eating and working out 3 times a week, so feel free to give advice or just read along, wish me luck

Nathan...I was also 260lbs about 2yrs ago, now 175lbs. The reason for my weight loss is about 12000 miles of cycling in those 2yrs. Initially you will find the cycling hard and tire easily, try not to get disheartened, you will find increased energy quite quickly. The weight will start to drop off rapidly at first then slow. Sometimes you will plateau and not seem to be able to loose more, but usually it takes a big effort or a special goal (like doing a long sportive) to kick start the descent below. Do set yourself goals and challenges as it gives something to work towards like riding a metric century (100km), then going for an imperial century (100miles).
I would advise not going mad on the diet, as most people fail at diets as they feel cheated of the nice things they like. Just eat sensibly, with enough to fuel you for the rides. Portion control is the key to loosing the weight. Have the stuff you like, but try and make it healthier (like having lean turkey instead of beef, cutting the fat off, not having full sugar soft drinks, but diet one's instead etc...) but just have slightly smaller portions. One thing that really worked for me was having a well stocked fruit bowl, so that when I got hungry and was tempted to snack in the biscuit barrel, I would have a piece of fruit instead, or drink a pint of water.

Well done for getting out there and making the change.......apart from marring my wife and the birth of my children, my weight loss is the single thing I'm most proud of in my life, as I've struggled with being overweight all my life......wel not any more.^_^

Good bit of inspiration on my first morning thanks alot dtate, most of the things you have said are what im going to try to work on, im off out on my bike now. And well done on your weight loss, it just goes to show it can be done

Don't get too obsessed with weight figures. I've been training for the London 100 since 1st April and have lost around 9-10 lbs. However met someone I haven't seen since last year and they commented on how much weight I'd lost. Now 9-10lbs isn't a lot - but I've been aware myself of how my body is "changing shape". I assume I'm converting fat to muscle mass (which is heavier) and changing that way. Think more in terms of fat loss that weight loss - they're not always the same thing.

Yes that it true muscle does weigh more than fat so im not going to go mental over weight, just done my first ride of the week 15.6 miles with a fair few inclines, feeling good.

Doesn't work like that. No it isn't

It isn't true. It simply takes up a lot less space, which is why you can appear slimmer but weigh more.

Wish people would stop with this nonsense

Please elaborate - if what I think is wrong then I'd like to correct the errors in my understanding so I don't repeat the same mistake
The human body has no mechanism that can turn fat tissue to muscle tissue. Therefore you can't convert fat to muscle - you can lose fat and put muscle on obviously.

Your second statement is a common misconception. Muscle is about 15% more dense than fat. So lb for lb - exactly the same. The difference is for that 1lb of muscle - there is less space taken.

Ah - you mean that the fat is converted to energy which you use through long duration exercise which probably in turn promotes an increase in muscle mass? If so then my understanding is right - I just used an incorrect word to express it. Will use "replace" (as in fat) rather than "turn" next time. Cheers!

The human body has a mechanism which drains and shrinks fat cells; and enlargens muscle cells.
This mechanism is called 'Healthy living'.

The only way to 'lose' fat cells is to physically remove them with a suction hose.

The energy substrate used (the source) has little to do with muscle tissue growth or repair after, mainly due to them being completely different processes. But yes "replace" is a much better word.
