The cost for disk was to high ive got to get other bits for france as well, etap for disk will be next year ready for the alps , picked up a used 11 speed 32-11 sram red of eBay for £120, both etaps will be wifli

Dean that’s class mate. Nice 1. It’ll put a big goofy smile on your face when you start using it. If you’re setting it up yourself it’s a piece of cake. Apart from the front mech. SRAM tutorial gives bad advice there. So let me know if you’re installing it yourself and I’ll find the better setting up advice for you.

That’s a blinding deal on the red cassette considering the rrp. I’ve heard it’s a bit noisy to be honest mate. But I’ve never had one so I’d be interested in your opinion. Having said that was it a one off or do they have more for sale?

It was a one off, I'll be setting it up myself for this build what rear cassette do you use

Your building it for you and your riding it, does it really matter which groupset you use

To me? Not in the slightest Dean. I was always going with etap. But for others it is still a consideration while choosing a group set.

To be honest if I was looking to build a vintage Italian bike. It would need to be on campag. Otherwise I wouldn’t bother with the project. But with modern frames and group sets it’s irrelevent to me.

Ultegra normally. They’re a lot cheaper than Dura ace and have a reputation for being sturdier. Dura ace is a bit lighter because it has come carbon inners.

I was thinking about getting a Dura ace cassette as a one off for France just to see how light I could get the bike one time. But if you’d of said they had more red cassettes at £120 I think I may of got one. I’ve heard (online for what that’s worth...), that the red cassettes are a bit noisy. But they’re super light and I think better made than Dura ace. I mentioned to the noise thing partly because if you’re not expecting it you might think you’ve set the bike up wrong.

It's a large  - but not overly snug (honest:rolleyes:)

BUT I compared Rapha sizing to theirs and it was a bit smaller if both are to be believed. Oh well - it's an incentive to get a bit slimmer - and if it's a bit on the tight size at least it'll be a bit more aero!

Now you’ve got me worried too!

I'll see how it goes with the red cassette if it is noisy then I'll get a ultegra

Whorty I don’t really get it bud but maybe that’s just me. My advice would be keep trying to get up the hill and one day you will. Maybe there’s a metaphor for my outlook on life in there somewhere...
Wouldn't it be dull though if we were all the same? :okay: Like I say, still 50/50 until I get the new bike and try it out around here on the rolling roads with a few sharp hills. I love riding SS, for me it means I can concentrate more on my surroundings rather than what gear I'm in :banghead: I'll not make a final decision until very close to the DD itself for sure.

This for me too. I know it sounds like something you’d hear in some crappy American film or something but I’m just a big believer in brushing yourself off and going again. And again and again.... it’s probably why I’m such an annoying ba@stard half the time!:rolleyes:. But if I wasn’t programmed that way, then maybe Bob would be defending me in court today rather than being clearly jealous of my fashion sense!^_^

I’m not trying to diminish your targets Whorty so sorry if it came off like that. That course is brutal. And forget about times and all that nonesense! But of course we can’t have that bet if you reserve the right to walk. I’d be mad wouldn’t I?
Fair do's, but I did walk a couple of times last year (but at least I didn't get a lift in a van up one of the hills ) so I have to expect to have to walk again this year whichever bike I take.

@kipsters, I would recommend the proper food stop. jacket potato beans and cheese . very welcome noursishment. oh and the Welsh cakes, yum yum
I'm 100% NOT stopping there this year. It was after that stop that I bonked. Too much food and too long a stop for me. Stomach cramps, couldn't get the legs moving again. I'm planning to carry more food this year and graze as I go.

i should think it will give you more free time to be concentrating on chewing on the bar tape :hungry::sweat: i havent looked at the elevation this year but i seemed to remember the nomadic group doing 12000ft climbing and i know i was in first gear by about mile 3
you know your body more than anyone and i know you done it with asthma ( much kudos ) - dont forget we had possibly the best weather possible on our run
we all like challenges like blokes in diving suits doing london marathon or a bloke hitting a golf ball doing lejog but more than anything i think time would be an issue , you will be doing no more than 3mph up a lot of hills , something to try and work some sort of equation for ! let us know what happens on test runs maybe do a 10milehilly tester to give you a rough time

I think myself and Breedon were in agreement last year that we were better off not stopping too long anywhere. I don’t think we could afford to if we wanted to get back to the hotel before midnight!
