Sorry Bill, didn't mean to belittle the part of the ride you did! I just meant it was the only part of the ride I was not in some kind of pain really! It is a bit daunting really when you get to that first feed stop and realise you "just" have another 100 miles - and all the big hills - to go . Your previous efforts in the Double Devil are legendary so you have nothing to prove to yourself so I'm sure it was the right decision to stop when you did and enjoy the weekend rather than have a day full of pain!
Biggest issue I had was neck and shoulder pain (plus my legs did stop working on anything uphill for the last few miles!). I'm usually very comfortable on that bike, but I just haven't put enough miles in to condition myself for that length of time on the bike - particularly as I do zwift rides on a different bike. No coincidence that the discomfort really kicked in after 40ish miles which is around the longest outdoor ride I've done since the DD last year - and there's only been a handful of them. I must try and get a few longer rides in between now and the TOC.
Either that or I'm just getting old
I didn't in the least bit think you were belittling the first part of the ride and fully understand that it was a slow pace by previous standards. I'm actually quite pleased that I didn't do the ride and was able to accept that I wasn't up to the job this year. Hopefully this is a sign that I'm accepting my limits these days, and now need to start the process of proper and sensible training so that I can one day do the 130 again (or was it a 125 when I did it?).
I'm thinking of getting started by buying a new frame in size small. Ideally a Canyon and just swap the parts over.
