Re food, you need a target for remembering, like every 10 miles or every 30 minutes, have something to eat. It takes a while for it to become second nature.
That was my issue on my century at the weekend. Did a slightly different route and missed the village with my second cafe stop, by the time I hit 70 miles I was pretty much running on empty. Luckily for me I had some energy bars/Gels Energy drink, a couple of those and I diverted to crawl to a superb dairy that did home made ice creams and puddings  ... wasn't a planned stop but it would have been rude not too

I really must make more of an effort to actually eat the bars and gels while riding, rather than have them in my pocket when I get home DOH! Guess that's what comes of doing short 50-60 mile rides most of the time.

The TOC where our best laid plans went out of the window within a short sprint. Nothing wrong when setting an individual good time, it is important for oneself esteem. If more of us decided to do it again, would it be a 'team' effort or guns blazing ?

I have the same problem with time constraints. I can do shortish rides but fitting in long rides is tricky. For me it’ll mean getting up very early on sundays I think. But improvement takes commitment I suppose is the thing. Stating the obvious but the longer distance will only work in our favour if we’re better prepared than the guys we’re up against. So it probably won’t!

The problem with the final 5 miles for me is that I was empty. And it was taking everything just to maintain a lower speed than I’d gone the rest of the ride. Cramp was creeping in and it felt like I was crawling to the line. People were passing me and I was aware of it. I’d like to put myself in a position where I haven’t run out of water too. I think if I had just bought two slightly larger bottles that would of been fine. I forgot I had a gel in my back pocket and I’d grabbed a load of apricots at the hotel. I think that’s down to fatigue and not thinking clearly. But that may of helped a little... I knew when I’d finished the ride I was spent and couldn’t of worked any harder so I’m ok with that. But I’d be more satisfied if I could of gone faster than my average speed, at least for the last mile, rather than limping home.
You still averaged 22mph for the last mile!

Who knows, that might be the best you/we are capable of but you never know, and it's good to have a target to motivate and aim for. A few years ago I wouldn't have been vaguely capable of doing what I did on Saturday - I only got my first road bike 4 years ago.

Jersey arrived - Thanks Paul. I could have got away with a Large, but the extra length will keep my bum warm.

A big :bravo:to all those who did the ToC - some cracking rides/times there!

Hopefully I'll get the chance to wear the new jersey on a meetup with you guys some time soon

Re food, you need a target for remembering, like every 10 miles or every 30 minutes, have something to eat. It takes a while for it to become second nature.

It's also easy to over analyse everything. You should do the analisys in the training, get drink and food sorted there. Then the sportive (and remember it is only a sportive) is just another ride, yes you might push on a bit more, but you'll know the numbers and how long you can sustain the numbers, and what you need to do to hold back enough to whip people in the last 5 miles, 1 mile and definitely the last 250m. There will always be stronger cyclists that's just life.

As long as you cross the line knowing that on the day you couldn't have done anymore then your work is done, it's time for a wry smile and collecting your medal with pride.

Yes and no kip. Analysis helps reflect on what you’ve learned / future training plans . It’s always easier for me at least, to learn from experience rather than theory.

@Whorty if your doing Toc next year I highly recommend TrainerRoad about £70 for the year I tried the workouts in zwift but never really liked them

Dean, they have upgraded the workouts recently. They still don't have the depth of TR nor do i think they ever will. Horses for courses perhaps. I used to use TR with the Sufferfest videos and a dumb trainer. Those were the days!

For me, guns blazing! To be honest, even though we weren't all together for much of the ride it still very much felt like a shared experience. I found staying on the right wheels at the pace we were going, and avoiding crashing into anyone etc. took a fair bit of concentration, so along with the exertion, it would have been quite hard to chat or anything like that anyway. Tommy and I were riding just a few yards apart for 75 miles but we barely talked! Do you remember when we tried to ride alongside each other and chat for a bit Tommy, and quickly found ourselves being dropped as a result - quick end of conversation, back to business!!

But everyone can ride it however they prefer obviously - if there's a few of us we may well naturally split into different groups. It would be different if it was just our group out for a ride of course, but there's so many other tempting wheels to follow!

It's an option, but I have subscriptions to Zwift, Bkool and BRVR currently so definitely can't justify a 4th. may have to drop one of the other ones ... but which one? Anyone have any suggestions which platform to drop?

Well you haven't used Brvr and do you think you will if not drop it.

What about bkool think you'll go back to it.
I've stopped my bkool £1 a month sub logged on my account for the first time in months to end it
