Truthfully, I never envisaged cycling so fast, and thought 25mph would be plenty fast enough. Cadence was manageable peaking at 110rpm at just over 30mph. The theory websites are pretty much spot on with the calculation. It would be a bit more HR management to drop down to 85rpm doing 30mph. Next year I would probably bring the Boardman off the turbo.

@Breedon

It was so exciting for the first 20miles, mental really. The pace settled, still quick but groups were forming and starting to work together instead trying to jump onto the next group in front. There were some strong outriders who were able to ride alone quicker but not many by 20 miles. You were stuck with your group and ride with the pace. I suppose it's natural selection of pacing

I know what you’re saying mate. It makes sense on paper. But it’s like I was saying the other day. It’s a lot more comfortable if you allow yourself a little wiggle room either side so you avoid the extremes.

But who am I to talk like some kind of expert.... I’m obviously not...I’ll probably make my own mistakes in the Pyrenees in a few weeks :smile:

You are in such trouble, remember he going to the Pyrenees with you ^_^

So we missed out on UCI qualification (even though I don't understand how they've worked it out - doesn't seem to be a straightforward matter of the first 25% as it states) - only by a few places /minutes though @TurboTommy . I'm already planning a more serious attempt at it next year ...!

Getting nearer to the front of the starting pen to more quickly get into a speedy group is really all I have in terms of a plan so far - plus not getting cramp of course!

Yes just seen the email. I think the percentage they gave us in the App was just in the sportive part. Looks like I missed by 2 1/2 minutes.

My plan would be to get fitter and faster :smile:

Might be a good motivator next year to go for this and if successful go to the World event in Aug/Sept (Poland I think).

I hear that!

No reason why we can’t get right to the front. That’ll make a big difference. Plus we both died at the end. I honestly think that could be a four minute swing at least right there. And you need to try get to the bottom of the reccurring cramp thing. It’s a longer course and we were lucky with the wind too. But that’s the same for everyone. I’m happy enough. I couldn’t put in anymore than I did yesterday. But I know we can get there in better shape and better prepared 2nd time around. Not just myself and you of course but all of us can target improvements.

There are several advantages to being near the front of the start. You start assuming that the nearest are quickest, but if a pack from behind overtakes your group and you have the pace to go with them you do, just keep repeating. If you can't hold the group then a slightly slower group will be just behind. You lads are just on the cusp of qualifying you should train for speed

a bit of motor pacing like Alex Dowset

Well, being a Pole I need to be able to compete in Poland ^_^ In theory being older should make it easier for me to qualify but the competition is fierce. As Tommy knows the Zsun racing guys who qualified are strong and put in huge mileage. Seems to work for them but then they may have the genetic advantages I/we may lack. If nothing else it will be fun, no doubt painfully so, to have a try.
