The glacial speed, legendary incompetence and offensive bills from solicitors.

Charity shop jigsaws with the last piece missing

We used to have to count those b*****s when one came in. I'd instruct the clients to count 100 pieces into a bowl at a time so they didn't get too lost. We sealed the box as soon as we were done.

At some point when the client was distracted, I always made sure I took one piece out of the bowl.

An hour's Zoom, at someone else's expense. Anyone else remember Pooh and Piglet walking around 100 acre wood?
Well this is just like that.

We discuss a point, make a decision then move on.
Next thing we're back discussing the original point.

HTF do these people survive?

My client is the worst and doesn't understand numbers. Scale, relativity and so on.
How do they survive? Should they command vast sums without knowing or understanding numbers?
Out the bill in and push for progress .

Different thing but when my wife was finalising her divorce her ex-husband's solicitor was constantly asking for things he had already been told or asking for confirmation of things that were bloomin' obvious
Her solicitor - who was on a fixed rate - reckoned he must have been on a PAYG type rate and every letter was being charged

It all comes down to money - especially with a certain type of solicitor

I've worked in various contact centres over the years and things have definitely become more like that. At my current employer, we're actively encouraged to try and get our customers to sort their own issues out using the app or our website. The problem is that a recent merger has resulted in a huge database conflict which means the app in many cases doesn't work and for a lot of customers, which is "a known issue" with no signs of resolution.

The other problem is that why the hell would I want to do that as I'd literally be talking myself out of a job.
