I would understand if it was a regular thing - but this was a one-off where the whole city was gridlocked. Also, I would give them more credit for sticking to their own rules if they actually stuck to their own. The communication is appaling, their homework doesn't even get marked, and when they give out detentions it's hit or miss whether the parents are notified or not. I could have been sat waiting in the past thinking he'd been kidnapped and phoned the police, but he was actually in detention and they'd not told us - and the kids aren't allowed to use their phones
I don;t know if the rules have changed - or if there are different rules in Wales
but when I was teaching if we gave out a 10 minute detention (technically 15 minutes but we made it 10 to give us leeway for things like kids turning up late) then we could do that without telling parents
But this was only because there were no School Busses going to and from our school so all the kids had to make their own way
However, anything longer and a slip HAD to be sent home to parents. SO this applied to the 30 minute detention given for missing a 10 minute one
etc
BUT - in most cases the 30 minute slip was sent home with the kids and no reply was required to show that it had reached the parents
In the event that a parent complained or something cropped up showing that the parents needed to know if the kids would be late - then the slips would be posted or text messages would be sent in addition to the slip
Hence that was all done via the Main Office
But we were told that legally we had to take steps for inform parents if the detention was ending more than 15 minutes after the official end of school
Most kids too whatever steps they could to avoid their parents finding out about ANY detentions - for obvious reasons!!!
