Xmas Eve and the day before, Is there really any need for mass panic and pushing and shoving in a supermarket for basically a Sunday dinner? People need to get a grip.

Well - you have to realise that people need to get enough food in to last a week or so - after all the shops will be closed for days so they if they don;t get 2 trolley loads in then the KIDS WILL STARVE!!!!

well - when I say the shops will be closed for days - I mean a day

but still -

My Dad used to comment on it every year - after all you always see lots and lots of people pushing loaded trolleys - and often a couple will have one each
OK - a lot of people have extended family round - but surely this means that only 1/2 or 1/3 of families need to do any extra shopping???
but it still happens every year

I remember once when I went to Sainsbury's on Christmas Eve and the queues were right up the aisles to the far end and every till was manned and working!!!

Ah, but it isn't really just one day. You can't do grocer shopping on boxing day because you have the SALES! To go to, where you can queue for more hours to save a few pence on something you didn't really want anyhow

Well half of families is rather a lot.

Absolutely it does get ridiculous though, you are right. I do strongly remember trying to shop in Tesco one Christmas eve many years ago, and the queue for the final pair of tills went all the way around the alcohol section of the store. I think the others were like your Sainsbury's example.

Yes but it is compulsory to eat at least twice as much as normal and have at least as much food to throw out afterwards because it's past it's best by date.
And that's before you've bought enough alcohol for everyone to drink themselves comatose on each of the 12 days.
Meanwhile I have a Christmas card with 'Winter Wishes' on. What exactly are 'Winter Wishes'? That's really trivial and annoying.
Oh well, Bah humbug. Must get the tree decorated and send some more cards - last post today (2nd class).

Disappointingly, members of my family have just returned from spending a vast fortune on grocery type stuff and have failed to purchase the above mentioned alcohol rations.
I'm not going to fret, shops are shut for 1 whole day and there's a 24/7 within walking distance that will be open Christmas day.

Most supermarkets are going to be shut 2 whole days this year.

There was a bit of a Furore several years back when Birmingham City Council rebranded the festivities as " Winterval ". Most cultures have some sort of celebration of the passing of the shortest day so I suppose " Winterval " is as good a term as any.

Oh the joy of scheduled deliveries. Be in between 1.30 and 3.30 to take delivery they said.
And here's a GPS tracker to let you watch the package.
Exciting times when it was 1 mile away and then it continued on it's merry little way and is now about 20 miles away.
Maybe tomorrow...
