On top of this you have YouTube Shorts because you don't want those other muppets across the ocean to get a stranglehold of "the most crap content you could watch in the shortest period of time".
I've just found out that you can hide all of them for 30 days at a time! Click the X in the top right of the Shorts panel and forget about them until they eventually reappear, then repeat the cycle...

I have the same problem, and because I refuse cookies I get gaming ads, most of which are frankly gross.

However, you can get downloaders; these only download the video but not the ads. You can then leave the video running on mute so the ads will be registered and the creator gets their revenue, and watch the video on a separate player Ad free.

Actually I was slightly exaggerating. I *do* watch the ads about half the time that they appear because
A) they are relevant to me, I particularly like the music in the hammerhead one
B) I want the content creator to get some money

There are some places (like work) where I do not log into YouTube and that's when I get those silly adverts (get rich quick, buy this heater, engineer left company to start his own mega biz etc).

Whilst on the question of landlines - ours was converted to digital a couple of years ago (as will be everyone's) - operates via broadband. Result - during Storm Arwen we had absolutely no communications with the outside world whatsoever - no electricity, so no internet, (so no landline), phone masts down, so no mobile signals, trees down - roads blocked. You can't imagine just how annoying it was to be instructed by local radio (until batteries ran out) that information was available online ..... so much for progress.
during storm Desmond when the Lancaster area was without power for three days, the only thing that did work was the landline; providing one had a phone that didn't require mains power. There were very long queues for the few remaining phone boxes in town. BT must've made a packet!

It's not bad if you're signing on as well

If it's anything like the German system, and I suspect it is, then the Job Center will want a copy of every bank statement and they'll look for anything they can reduce.

From what I've seen of the UK system, they'll be even more enthusiastic in this regard.

Of course you can work illegally, cash only, but that's a risk; governments don't like poor people getting too much money under the table; they think it should go to their rich chums.

One distillery I ran had a routine visit from the tax inspectors. We were surprised that they wanted access to our petty cash records. They said we would be surprised at the number of businesses who paid some wages through petty cash instead of the PAYE system. We did not.

I only have to deal with petty cash, thank goodness, but this explains why the system is so strict with every transaction documented on paper and by email. Being a non-profit and partly funded by the Job Center complicates matters of course.

The organisation was audited earlier this year and passed with flying colours.

Many years ago, a wee manny who ran a small garden centre had an overnight robbery where the thieves took his takings; he wasn't a great believer in banks - !
The perpetrators were apprehended and as the garden centre owner walked away from the court, the Inland Revenue were waiting to have a 'wee chat' with him - !

Whilst passing one of the many manicure shops in the city, noticed a customer having her nails done.
Nothing odd in that, but she was still wearing her chunky headphones. Would that imply that she's not particularly interested in any conversation with the manicurist - ?

I bought a packet of haslet this evening for me to try, but mainly for my dog to eat. At least I think I bought it. I've rooted through my shopping bag and fridge, but there's no sign of it. Something tells me I didn't buy it after all. My last hope if I did buy it is that it could've fallen out my bag while the bag was in my car boot. I'd like to have a look, but my car's parked a fair way off and it's peeing down, so checking will have to wait till tomorrow.
