The point about saying "in the world" or 'On earth" is just to say there isn't anything anywhere which is more xxx.

If you say it is the fastest car in Cardiff, that implies there may be faster ones on Swansea, or London, or in Germany. Or indeed anywhere outside of Cardiff.

If you say it is the fastest car in the world, then you are saying there is no faster car ANYWHERE.

Right right I see what you mean.

It just seemed like ".. in the world/on the planet/ on earth" seem to be words that do not need to be said, because it's implied.

If we said "tallest mountain on earth" makes sense because it may not be the tallest in the solar system. But "fastest car in the world" is like "where else apart from.the world would we be talking about, there are no cars anywhere apart from on the world."

But yes I see your point.

Or when so many folk say something is 'pretty / fairly unique'
Unique is a standalone word that requires no qualification. Something is unique or it isn't.
End of, nuff said - !

Unless you think it's unique but others maybe around and therefore saying is unique may not be the truth?

Probably more 'amused' than 'annoyed' in this case...

I am hard of hearing and so can struggle with certain accents, and the Glasgow accent is definitely one of them! I was watching The Field of Blood on Netflix earlier and struggling to make out some of the dialogue so I turned on the subtitles. I was amused to discover that the (presumably auto-generated?) sub-titles were even less accurate than what my ears could make out! There were many instances of transcriptions like "Aye, and then a wee [inaudible] deed a flesh schooner, write [inaudible] never!", which were not exactly helpful!
... Pardon?

That's one that grinds my gears, especially when I hear people who should know better mis - using the word. 🤦🙄

If you take something from a company it is theft.

But if a company takes something from you it is a civil matter

What on earth are you talking about?

Matters of contract are almost always civil matters, and that generally the only way a company can take something from you.

Folk who go into a trendy coffee shop and ask for a 'lartay' instead of a latte; short pronounced 'a'.
'Latte' is Italian, geddit right - !
Or; invariably in a sporting context, when folk say 'absolutely decimated'. Again, a standalone word meaning a loss of one tenth of the amount and not the huge loss implied by the addition of 'absolutely'. :gun:

I've just had to turn my radio off! I intended listening to various football games commentary, but after hearing 'wiv' (with) and frea'ens' (threatens) plus other lazy attempts at the King's English I just could not take it anymore!:stop:
