Well I needed some training and my new Ridgeback Voyage needed a test run so what can you do?

Simples! Take three days of work, load her up and catch a train to Llanfair P.G.
P9210011.jpg

My route choice was fairly simple. Follow all the coastal roads that you can going round Anglesey in an anti-clockwise direction.
It turns out that that may well be the best way to get round the island as you hit the hills first!
My first day took me along to Beaumaris
P9210014.jpg

then onto Penmon Point.
P9210016.jpg

Back to Penmon village and then follow the coast lanes around the island. Had some fantastic views, I just took my time and enjoyed myself. Well apart from when I decided to drop down into Red Wharf Bay. It's about a 1:4 hill down and what goes down must come up! It's a 1:4 hill up as well. I admit it, I had to push that bit.

The weather so far had been a bit gusty but dry. When I eventually reached Moelfre it hammered down. I sought shelter near the local library and then continued to Llaneilian where I found a sheltered campsite for the night. It was very sheltered because he let me pitch between two static caravans!

Next day I set off again on my journey. Had some lovely views around the coast and made it to Holyhead country park. Followed the tracks through the wood and to my surprise came across a large, eerie pet cemetary!
P9220069.jpg

I continued through Holyhead and made the mistake of following a bridleway. This was only the second little section I had to push. Not because it was too steep but because it was too rocky.

I continued with the obligatory trip to South Stack with a small, and last, little push.

Then zoomed round the coast towards my intended campsite near Rhoscolyn. Unfortunately when I got there, there was a nice sign stating no tents despite it being marked on the OS maps as a campsite. Instead I continued on my route and found a site at Caergeilliog. It was not a bad site, very flat, quite sheltered and, best of all, it was free because I couldn't find anyone to pay! The bad news was that my MSR XGK packed up and produced little heat and mostly soot so I ended up with no breakfast.

Final day I continued and now made cracking time around the coastline and very soon made it to Rhosneigr for a pasty breakfast. Afterwards I zoomed round the rest of the island and by mid-day I was back at Llanfair P.G. after about 120 miles. Fantastic.

There now remained only one thing to do. No, not get on the train. Instead I had to cycle off the island, though Bangor and then up the A5 to Ogwen where I was meeting some climbing friends for our climbing club huts anniversary dinner. That hill up the A5 just keeps going on and on and on, but I made it to the top with only one stop at Bethesda to buy some Lucozade Sport!

My new bike was comfy all the way and has already proved it's worth, but where next is all I can think of!!

Yep that was the one, Silver Bay.

Still it was a nice country lane to cycle down to, just a shame that I was knackered and ready to stop and then found myself with a few more miles to go!

It looks like Silver Bay has gone all up market and posh as they now don't allow 'tourers or tents'. Obviously there must be a better class of people who only stay in static caravans!

The loading was not all that heavy.
I took:

Tent

Thermarest

Sleeping Bag

Sleeping bag liner

Pillow

MSR XGK Stove

Fuel bottle

Pans

Mug

KFS

Wooden spoon

Matches

Candle light

Camping knife

Pot cleaning kit

Repair kit/Toolbag

Lycra shorts

Socks

Cycle top vest

Alien cycle top

Karrimor cycle top

Karrimor waterproof

Gloves

Underwear

Socks

Trousers

L/S Thermal

RAB top

RAB duvet

Hat

Food

They all fitted in the panniers easily with the tent, sleeping bag and thermarest on top of the rack and left plenty of room inside for adding bits of food as I went round.

I don't know what the total weight was, I'll have to weigh it next time, but I don't think it was more than 20kg, possibly less. The heaviest item is the tent, its a VauDe Power Ferret about 3kg. Its a bit of a bulky tent but not a bad weight but loads of space inside. The sleeping bag is a 2-season bag but the silk liner makes it a lot warmer and all my clothing is quite light. Having used to run mountain marathons (OMM, LAMM) I always buy the lightest kit I can afford so it all helps keep the weight down. I even only took a small amount of toothpaste as there was no point carrying the whole tube of paste! Old film containers still come in handy!

It was great to be using my Karrimor Iberian panniers again, they've been sitting in the loft since early 2004 when I last had a bike that would take a pannier rack. I refused to get rid of them as they are so well made that they should last for many more years yet, apart from the hooks but I have some VauDe replacements to fit so I should be alright there.

If your walking round the island then there are several beaches and bays where you could just wild camp without anyone knowing, or caring as long as you are clean and tidy. I can definitely recommend the site at Llaneilian. It was a camping and caravan club listed site and was very clean and tidy. They even had a small library of books that you could borrow/swap. The showers were charged at 20p, but that lasted about 7 minutes which was more than enough time to get washed in.

Cycling wise, everyone was caring and considerate when they met me on some very narrow lanes, making it a really safe ride. There was one obvious exception when I met a red van coming down a country lane. He was going way to fast to stop and had to throw it against the hedge/bank on his side of the road to avoid hitting me. I'd love to have heard him explain those dents and scratches to his boss in the Post Office!

Hello Batmancaver .
Its Sad about Siver Bay going Upmarket . But lucky for you yo found another campsitre nearby . What was It called ?
Thats a good comprehensive kit list ,.
The one I keep getting told Is keep everything to grammes and light . The word Is Minimalistic .
Your tent Is heavy for touring . Mines 2Kg heavy also .
But as you have already compensated . I 've heard about these Silk liners giving so many degree's of heat And pack small . " But they are not Cheap . Over £20.
I use a fleece blanket myself . Which Is classed as heavy 700 grammes . But I like the warmth and comfort .
Thanks for the tip about Wild Camping on remote beach's . It depends were I land up each evening . As I have a list of all the Campsites on Anglesey . As I am also a member oof the Uk. Campsite .co.uk Forum . Whats the Name of the site at LLaneilian CC
And Is It a reasonable price !!!!!!!!!
. Looking at the Map there seems to be a big gap of ( No Campsite's  between Beaumaris untill you get to Benllech) .
As I found on my 2nd Cycle tour of North Wales Recently .
Everybody O.K. People wanting to have a chat about Where I am going the, bike and how far I am travelling to .
It might be different when I am hiking and on foot .
Cheers  :hello:

Hi ZiZag

The campsite at Llaneilian was called Point Lynas Caravan Site. Don't let the word caravan put you off, they DO have a camping field.
It was here:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Men...enai+Bridge,+Gwynedd,+United+Kingdom&t=h&z=16

The other campsite was at Caergeiliog.
Google maps show it quite well:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Men...enai+Bridge,+Gwynedd,+United+Kingdom&t=h&z=16

It's sandwiched between the A5 and the A55 but the noise polution from either was very minimal.

The site facilities were a toilet (clean) and a wash room with a big old sink in it. I didn't see a shower anywhere. The site was nice and flat all over.

The site may be purely for caravans and campervans so it may pay to do a campsite search and see if you can find any information with which you can verify that.

I only camped the two nights on this trip as I only live near Prestatyn so it's a short train ride to Llanfair PG.

I actually stayed at the Kingsbridge campsite a few years back with the family. At the time it was a really nice site. The owners looked after it well and cared about the environment - I think they had a Gold David Bellamy award for the site.

After that going round the coast there does seem to be a bit of a void in the campsite distribution.

Some friends and I did camp on the west side of Red Wharf Bay a few years ago whilst on a birdwatching tour of north Wales whilst at Uni. That was about 1998 and nobody complained about our tents then.

I'll have a look in my planning notes for the Anglesey path and see if I found out about any other sites round the island and let you know.
