Interesting analysis on the sprint . Can Philipsen not sprint in a straight line
It's easier to win if you put the rider behind you into the fence. Surprised that result stood. We've seen relegations for less.

Others including Girmay moved across, the sprint hadn't fully started

Probably wouldn't have happened on cable gears 🙂

Actually less likely to have happened with electronic. Cables stretch, making it more likely to happen at an inopportune moment. With electronic it is easier to micro adjust and in SRAM's case, can be done by the cyclist while riding. The Mechanics wouldn't have let a bike out without checking gear adjustment so more likely to be something from the ride itself - crash, stretched cable if not electronic, bump in the road etc.

The more likely cause in this case I think (from experience) is the chain possibly being stretched slightly - which, under the force of a Sprinter's power, can occur more frequently.

He had a wheel change early on. I don't know which wheel tho, I was listening but not watching

Neither cables nor chains stretch. They do strain as per Hooke's law but not by a noticeable amount on a bicycle.

It an appreciable uphill for most of last km to the line today, I checked it out earlier. Gradient only slackens in last 50m, and it's quite narrow with the barriers up. Launching early probably not the best tactic...

If the spare wheel had a different cassette that would do it if no adjustment made. Say from 11-25 to 11-30 as the spacers between cogs aren't quite the same, a mm here or there. A knock by the Mechanic would have had to be significant to affect the derailleur.

In cycling we refer to the wear on the pins as 'stretching' since the elongation of said wear does increase the length of the chain; the pitch changes. My point stands.

Park Tool make a very nice tool for measuring this and it is absolutely noticeable and it absolutely does make a significant difference and a worn (stretched) chain absolutely can lead to it skipping cogs over undulating terrain.

Cables do actually stretch as it happens.

I very much doubt that would the case on a TDF bike. They will get serviced after every single stage to be in tip top shape.
