My Dad was RAF ground crew in WW2 - Armourer on Stirlings then Halifaxes
Part of their job was to get all the bangy stuff out of the plane after it landed after a mission - including bombs and bullets - before anyone else goes near the aircraft .Clearly crew left first whether OKor wounded but crew that were clearly dead were left until the plane was declared safe
This meant he would be the first into the rear gunners turret to get the remaining ammunition
He mentioned once, after a drink or two, that turrett could be a bit difficult if the gunner had been hit by cannon fire from a fighter - never mentioned it again
