Not my idea, but a good one, I've always thought. Back in the 80s there was a splendid performance car magazine called Fast Lane. In one of his columns, the editor Peter Dron (still alive and kicking, I was pleased to discover) posited a solution to those twin urban menaces of pigeons and people with loud stereos. 'Part vacuum cleaner, part gun' it would fire the avian at the human. Would also work for errant riders of e-bikes, etc…

I would like to be able to buy Chinese shifters with cockroach beards already fitted. I was getting quite excited at some that I saw for sale on eBay until I noticed that this essential feature had been omitted! ^_^

In 5 years time you won't be able to buy a bike without them. You and I will be mocked online for claiming our old bikes work just as well without them, and that it's all just marketing/PR to sell more bikes.

Apparently a "cockroach beard" is a kind of hairstyle where two strips of hair fall either side of the face, like cockroach antennae.

In fact, this kind of "cockroach beard" bangs is very common in costume dramas, especially martial arts dramas and Xianxia dramas, because most of the characters go Chic or immortal route. Remember the style of Xiao Zhan in "Chen Qing Ling"! The same "cockroach beard" is far worse, because Xiao Zhan's "cockroach beard" is paired with flowing long hair, but Di Lieba's "cockroach beard" is paired with a clean bun, leaving only Those two look weird.

So maybe this is referring to the fact that the cables go under the bar tape rather than sticking out of the lever like ... er ... a cockroach beard.
