Things you like and dislike about where you live

Taking a cue from a current thread, I wondered what members liked and disliked about where they live.

I'm in the North East.

Likes:

Cost of living is cheap, Pale Rider Towers is paid for and I can afford to work part time.

Wide open spaces, some people complain about the traffic, but there's hardly any in comparison to further south.

Beautiful countryside in easy reach - I expect most of us can say that.

Good cycling to be had once you know where - I expect most us can say that.

Everyone knows everyone else, so you are never short of someone to talk to and gossip with, and you often bump into someone you know while going about your business.

Dislikes:

Much of the built up area is run down - Mayfair it 'aint.

Low cost of living means Pale Rider Towers will never be worth a lot.

Higher than average dregs content, the public behaviour of some of the young lads - and lasses - leaves a lot to be desired.

High crime area, I've been burgled three times, although not recently.

Everyone knows everyone else - other people know your business almost before you do.
Could be an apt description for Carlisle but where I live now (on the outskirts of Carlisle) is more akin to Darras Hall and yes I was brought up in Elswick and Scotswood, so I know what the North East was like

Seriously though, here in Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire, West Central Scotland:

Likes: The scenery, the history, reasonably decent cyclepaths, the proximity to the countryside and Glasgow, so you get the best of both worlds, the low cost of living, and people seem to be reasonably friendly.

Dislikes: Faslane on my doorstep - If something happens, we will get it first. If Wastemonster really want it, why don't they have it down south?? Oh, no, wait, that would never do!
Also, it is a run down area and the Clouncil have absolutely NO imagination whatsoever. Worse still, we have Jackie ******* Bailie as our MSP. 'Nuff said.
Our local hospital has been cut back and cut back and with it's proximity to Loch Lomond, something Big is eventually going go happen and suddenly the powers that be will all be trying to reinvent the wheel and 'review the situation'.
We have good public transport links..... Up until about 11PM, so if you go out for the night in Glasgow, you will most likely get stuck and have to shell out £30 - 40 for a taxi unless you stay there all night and get the first train back.

Oh, and the local Neds make certain areas a bit crap.

On the whole though, I don't imagine that where I live is any worse than anywhere else really, it is all swings and roundabouts after all.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
I live in Powys. Likes. Its very rural, im on my own. Only one neighbour. Lots of open spaces. Locals don't drive like maniacs. We leave that to the tourists. Its very very quiet and I like that. Neighbours are always willing to help If you need it. Very low crime. Headline news is if someones shed is broken into.

dislikes. Decent towns are far and few between. Not many shops. No job opportunities. Not many facilities due to closures. not many busses, hence you have to have a car. No cycling clubs. No clubs of any kind really. People can feel isolated if they don't or can't drive. There is nothing for kids to do and they have to travel long distances to see friends. Parents and grand parents have to do a lot of driving.

Some people like the life and some don't. I personally love it and would never live in a city again.

Love North Wales. Only 2 things I don't like: the poor state of the roads in towns and the fact that there is always something being done on the A55. It was only cleared of cones for 88 days last year. The Welsh are lovely , warm people and the scenery is great.

North East England.

Likes.
1. Open country is nine doors from my house.
2. The Pennines, North Yorks Moors and Yorkshire Dales are close by, the Lake District is a little more than an hour's drive away.
3. It's not Laaandon or the Sarf East.

Dislikes.
1. None.

Likes: Flat, everything close enough to cycle to. Lots of decent folk.
Dislikes. Flat. I feel faint at the sight of a speedhump. Lots of nobbers.

Lived in one of the out laying villages for a few years. Quiet, cycling, fresh air and all that other stuff was great, on the doorstep. But moved back into town as it was all a bit..boring.
