Taking a cue from a current thread, I wondered what members liked and disliked about where they live.

I'm in the North East.

Likes:

Cost of living is cheap, Pale Rider Towers is paid for and I can afford to work part time.

Wide open spaces, some people complain about the traffic, but there's hardly any in comparison to further south.

Beautiful countryside in easy reach - I expect most of us can say that.

Good cycling to be had once you know where - I expect most us can say that.

Everyone knows everyone else, so you are never short of someone to talk to and gossip with, and you often bump into someone you know while going about your business.

Dislikes:

Much of the built up area is run down - Mayfair it 'aint.

Low cost of living means Pale Rider Towers will never be worth a lot.

Higher than average dregs content, the public behaviour of some of the young lads - and lasses - leaves a lot to be desired.

High crime area, I've been burgled three times, although not recently.

Everyone knows everyone else - other people know your business almost before you do.

London.

Likes. It's awesome

Dislikes. Yeah, right.

Nice street, good neighbours, good cycling, pretty scenery, good facilities on doorstep = shopping, swimming pool, gym, library, good quality of life in general, also Homebase nearby ()
Dislikes
High cost of living, high cost public transport, weather, slaughterhouse nearby (see the cattle float going by and the wee face gazing out, makes me feel sad and evil).

Don't tell 'em Pike...you'll ruin it for the rest of us. What part of N.E.?

From Essex, live in Oslo, Norway.

Likes:

Very strong economy, hence good salaries (if that is important for you)

I work 6 months of the year (summer months) and free to idle/travel for the winter period

Long hours of daylight in the summer

Beautiful scenery and nature all around

Clean and safe

Dislikes:

Very poor road surfaces (for cycling)

Lack of diversity of character (very clone-like in thinking and behaving)

Lack of sense of humour

Everything is expensive (a result of the high salaries)

but overall I'm happy here, as long as I don't have to spend the winters at home.

I like our local hills and dales - lots of lovely cycling and walking routes. Sunny days round here are great.

I dislike the fact that the only way to cycle on flat(tish) roads round here is to stay on the busy valley roads. We do not get enough of those great sunny days, and the grim days can be really grim!

I would like to be closer to some big mountains and the sea.

I am not even slightly interested in big cities. If somebody offered me an all expenses paid holiday to London for a month, plus £100 a day spending money, I would turn it down unless I were absolutely desperate for the £3k! (In which scenario, I would stay inside the hotel for a month, keep fit in their gym, and pocket the cash ... :okay:)

A village in rural as it ever gets East Midlands.

Likes; the forest, the scenery, the low crime the peace and quiet.

Dislikes; the potholes, the expansion of nearby towns swallowing up the surrounding villages (although my village won't go in my lifetime I should think), the chumps that treat the village like Santa Podas they drive through.

I live on the very north of Bradford, near LB airport and I love it. Great cycling everywhere, I can choose hills (which i don't often tbh) or cycle along the Aire Valley to Skipton and into the Dales. I utilise Saltaire, Ilkley, Harrogate, Leeds and York for my culture kicks, bang per buck, it's hard to beat and I always feel lucky.

Would swap it for similar on the outskirts of London tho'..................

Choice of transport facilities right on the doorstep (train, tube, DLR, Cable car, fast ferry, bus, taxi and of course the car and bike)
24x7 shopping, eating, clubs and pubs and entertainment (2 x cinema and 02) all within walking distance
Freedom to walk anywhere and see something to see when you get there

Dislike
House prices that are now way beyond eye watering (I could buy a mansion with pool, helipad and stables in northern UK for the cost of a 3 bed semi around here, Really.)
Lack of space
The constant 'go'
Air Quality/pollution
