X ray on my right thumb this morning, it’s been painful and slightly swollen for a while now so could be arthritis.

Now getting the car washed, then home for a spot of lunch and a walk this afternoon

A proper Retirement thread comment here

We - SWMBO and myself - rang the government pension helpline to pay the National Insurance shortfall for the last few years

45 minute wait on hold but apparently our call was very important (I have ranted about that before so I will resist this time!)
but they did at least predict it to be 40 minutes at the start

anyway - we checked my wife's and sorted out how to pay it

Then took over and we checked mine
apparently I have a shortfall of £907 which I can pay off
but apparently my contribution are already fully paid up to the point where I will get a full pension
which is next year

so I CAN pay £907 - but if I do I get nothing back for it

so a little letter

Dear Rachel

****off

Love Mike

Anyway - looking forward to a full pension for both of us starting next year
at which point I will be happy that if I snuff it first then my wife will have enough money coming in to live happily from then on

so all that's sorted

see - a proper retirement thing!!!
and not lots of woffling about dogs and ironing and underpants

a busy couple of days. Kitchen is in the process of being ripped out so noisy and cold. This coincided with the surround to the manhole cover between us and next door starting to crumble. Through the gap I could see the " water " level was suspiciously high and there was a smell of sewage😮. I phoned Wessex Water and after a few questions they advised that someone would come to take a look. Two hours later a van appeared and a very young looking lad rang the bell and introduced himself. He lifted the cover and said that there’s a blockage, went to his van and came back with rods and a plunger and proceeded to vigorously ram it down the chamber and along the pipe. This cleared it so he went back to his van and unreeled a power hose to jet it out. He put the cover back and said he'd advise the supervisor that the surround was crumbling, and to expect someone to come and fix it witin a week or so.
All through this he'd been relentlessly cheerful. He went back to his van to finish the paperwork and returned 5 minutes later with plastic barriers which he erected around the manhole cover. His supervisor had advised him that as the chamber was at the end of a passageway between two houses it was regarded as a " Public Bridleway " and therefore a hazard to the public. That meant that a priority team was dispatched, the first arrived about 6pm followed by a second van that travelled from Swanage. They worked till about 9pm rebuilding the chamber, I kept them supplied with hot drinks and biscuits. Before they left they advised that the chamber wasn't draining freely and they would " call it in " and not to be surprised if a crew turned up about 11pm. They came back about 10am this morning and sent cameras in both directions. A chunk of concrete was the culprit and that was removed and the pipes power flushed through. All in all a quite intense experience, but glad that all is resolved and we now have a brand spanking new chamber surround and cover.
