Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Retirees…do you ever wish to swap your freedom for the entrapments of youth? You know, work, mortgage, needy kids but generally better, fitter heath?

As a late 40s something, I’ve got one eye on age 57 and the freedom associated with it. Should I regret wishing my youth away?

Hell no.

Probably because the time just seems to fly by so quickly when you’re older. I occasionally have regrets about not doing more when I was younger exercise wise especially.

Hopped on the Wattbike for an easy group ride on the Isle of Arran.

No. A resounding no. Fortunately I'm fit, healthy and strong despite two major health issues in the past 10 - 12 years. These are some of the best years. There's so much to enjoy.

My only regret in life is I didn't have the courage to do more when I was young. In my 20s I was far, far too focused on career etc. That of course is what you were supposed to do in the 70s. I should have travelled much more.

We delayed the ride start time and got a decent 48 miles in. Stopped at a cafe we haven't used for a while. The menu has changed and clearly the target demographic. The service was quick, friendly and my food was piping hot. I think for £5.95 it was reasonable to expect perhaps double the quantity of beans. We will go back though.

Regular readers will know your correspondent has invested heavily in a Lusso winter base layer and jacket. WOW! In fact WOW! WOW! In today's conditions, damp, overcast, ocassional drizzle, cold wind I would usually wear four layers and look like Michelin man. I would arrive at the cafe warm but bathed in sweat. I would change into a dry base layer and probably put on a wind blocker for the ride home. Often I would feel chilled for 10 - 12 miles after the cafe.

Today? Lusso base layer and jacket. Arrived at the cafe bone dry. Got home bone dry. What a revelation. This cost me well north of £200 but worth every penny.

I did pack a spare base layer and wind blocker just in case.

Would I swap. Tricky.

If I retained the knowledge I have now, then a strong maybe. I have learned so much over the years that I wished I had known earlier.

The only thing I really envy youngsters for is all the years they have ahead of them.

I don’t envy them, I was born in 1965 I had my childhood in the 1970’s, started my working life in the early 1980’s, bought my first house for less than 20k in 1985, and my career took off in the 1990’s. I’ve had a very fortunate life, no regrets whatsoever. I certainly wouldn’t want to be 25 years old now.
