I just seen on the local Facebook that some people had to be rescued from the top of Snowdon last night. They are lucky to be alive as it was minus 9 up there then. Why do people take a risk of going to the top of a mountain when they must know how cold it will be ?
Clearly they were not properly prepared for the conditions
Unless there was an accident or other event that couldn't be predicted
I used to work with a fell runner - he used to be one of the best around when he was younger and his son was heading that way as well.
Anyway - he still ran in the "veterans" category and they had a race in Snowdonia one weekend. I was a big race and tackled several big mountains - including part of Snowdon
Anyway - the weather was predicted to be bad - but turned out to be terrible with added wind and the rescue people were upt o their eyes trying to save people from mountains.
So on Monday morning we asked him how the race went and if everyone was OK
Not a single problem with the Fell Runners. They were wearing running kit (for cold weather but still running kit. But they were all very experienced in mountains and when the weather went past a certain point every single one of them kicked in planB and headed for the nearest safe place and rang the central point or a relative that could do so
and came along and reported in at the control desk at the finish.
Clearly the race had been abandoned some time before - but a fair few of the runners got changed and went off to help the rescue people
So - if you know what you are doing and come equipped and prepared then only the unpredictable makes you need rescue.
mostly anyway
any road up - need to get off soon to pick kids up from school and stuff
