Start of last weeks mini bike tour. Rather wonderfully the new S-Bahn from my local station goes right through Freiburg and the Black Forest to Villingen, where I wanted to start riding. This is in Villingen, just after arriving.

I found a couple more pictures from last weekend:

New(ish) double deck intercity train from Stuttgart to Singen passing through idyllic surroundings in Epfendorf, in the Neckar valley. These are push-pull sets with a driving trailer and a Bombardier Traxx 3 locomotive, designated as Class 147-5 by DB.

Travelling back from the family last week enabled me to take a few train pics. Alongside the class 147 and double deck carriages in use for intercity trains, DB has recently introduced a small fleet of double deck multiple units. This one is in Stuttgart about to take the same route to Singen.

Also a couple of class 218's which are still amongst my favourite locomotives. These must surely disappear from the scene soon as only electric trains will be allowed in the new rebuilt station. Double deck EMU in the background.

These locomotives are known as "Rabbits" for obvious reasons.

At Neuchâtel in the French-speaking part of north-west Switzerland, the national railways mainline runs some way up the hillside and back from the lake, but this metre gauge tram runs along or near the lakeside from Neuchâtel to the village of Boudry, and the line originally went further. Although it is run by the municipal transport company, it counts as a railway, and interrail tickets are valid on it. This was lucky for me and I caught one back to town after a bike ride along the lake

I'm not a full on cagoule wearing, thermos drinking railway nut, although I do find the railways interesting.

More pertinently, riding to the station and taking my folder on the train is one of lifes pleasures. In less than a year I've been as far sarf as Kent, and as far North as Edinburgh on the overnight sleeper. Wonderful fun.

Too far gone for that lot - must be a bus spotter!!

You know, as a former spotter (the numbers), I am not sure I have ever actually seen anyone do that anyway.

I used to work with a bona fide bus spotter. For one of his landmark birthdays, he got to drive a bus. One of the peculiarities of the UK driving licence is that you can drive a vintage bus on a car licence, provided there are not more than 8 passengers and it's not for business.

A work colleague ( another train driver) was a full on bus nut . Several times he was on a please explain for late departures because he was outside at the bus station taking photos and numbers .
