Blimey that was cold. Garmin reckoned the temperature was floating between 2 and 3 degrees all day. No ice as it hasn't been freezing at night (I don't think I'd have gone out if there was ice). Low cloud - and very poor visibility because of the cloud/fog on top of the North Downs. Climbing was OK because I tended to warm up, but descents were painful.

I've been home for a while and the feeling is yet to return to my feet.

Still, it was a nice ride despite the cold. Not many cyclists about - unsurprisingly. 102km in the bag.

Yep I felt the cold just walking the dog. Glad I did my long ride yesterday.

Wow that was cold! Finally got the 100 km done for this month. Very pleased as I’m away next weekend so I knew today was now or never. A slow hilly ride to Windermere which I’m going to feel in the knees later.

I’d planned this ride for Tues (4th Feb) but I felt good enough to do it today. I was always behind the game as I had a late start (1.15pm) so it was close to 8pm when I got back to the van. That meant the last 90 mins were in the dark – no problem but my new front light isn’t holding its charge and it was on its last legs by the end of the ride. Tony (at the LBS) has a better one on order for me and hopefully I’ll be able to replace it next week.

Today’s route was (if anyone’s interested):

Mauron (ZIPV), Ploërmel, Malestroit (gare), Pleucadeuc (gare), off the V3 and onto the D112, Pleucadeuc (town), D774 to la Pierre Longue, half right at Pierre Longue, looped around to come into Bodevrel from the east then N to the C2, west on the C2 to la Muterne, then N on the D149 to reconnect with the V3, Pleucadeuc (gare), Malestroit (gare), Ploërmel, Mauron (ZIPV)

About 102km on the clock when I got back to the van – did another 3km to make it 105.08km.

There’s a lot of water in the river Oust at the moment

As long as I breathe, I attack.
I had planned to go out yesterday but family had other ideas 😞 cutting back on weekend overtime after today so I will potentially get a day every weekend to get out as currently with shifts and every Sunday at work I lose 2 weekends a month before I even try to ride.Dont get me wrong the money is nice but it's never going to be long term and I m knackered most of the time anyway

I took one look at the rather splendid frost yesterday morning and went straight back to bed. I did virtually ride up the Tourmalet later on. The virtual weather was much nicer.

Am I getting wimpier or have we had a particularly cold start to the year?

No it's definitely been mostly cold with a couple of 1-2 day 'gaps' of 'warm enough'. Down on the south coast it's warmed up today: frustratingly not free. It goes cold agin later in the week so maybe tomorrow, with some gusty wind, and drizzle from 2pm.

Two things work together make me less likely to go out on my bike these days:
1) I'm definitely wimpier and more risk averse, especially when it comes to ice.
2) I own a turbo which has video simulations of nice places.

I am a sucker for challenges! I am definitely in! Also this might push me to get out and find an extra reason to push a bit farther.
I did not read all the posts yet but . . . How do we track this?
The thread for recording monthly (or any) rides of 100+km is the one linked below - hopefully my post #1 will be clear. Just because you didn't ride 100km in January doesn't mean you can't join in.

That was not the most enjoyable ride I've done. The first 50k was very cold and wet. I arrived at Lingfield with a full on glove emergency. There was no way I could keep going with freezing, saturated hands. Fortunately a glove change over for 100% waterproof rubbery work gloves was OK. It's hard for me to get gloves onto the hideous claws I have for hands. The second half of the ride was flatter, a degree or so warmer, but still wet.

But it's done. I'm not in great shape at the moment. My speed over regular routes is way down. I was thinking, when I reached 80km how, not so long ago, I'd stop for a celebratory half-way (50 mile) snack, feeling good. Today I was thinking "nearly there, if I can just hang on for 20k.
