A nice solo ride out this morning, with some nice views of the planes coming out of Brize. The wind was getting a bit irritating on the way out but was nice for the return leg - I might have finally learned something. Although pace was probably pushing it a bit much for that distance I didn't blow up (32kmh average moving speed)

Went down to Somerset in the campervan yesterday. Found a great little campsite, just south of Bristol.

Might have to go back and reverse the route, going up Wooky Hole 😁

Plan today was to do the "Snowdon Dog" from Dolgam campsite.
IMG-20240626-WA0012.jpg

But a planning error meant we went the really steep way up to Nebo and a weather error, meaning too much wind zapped our legs of energy. So we did a Little Welsh Dog instead, missing out the out and backs of Stwlan Dam and Llanberis Pass (both of which we had both done before).

Some hefty climbs still, with the road from Tanigrislau to Beddgelert being the highlight (as it was mostly downhill!).

Coming off Penmachno was a struggle into a head wind. Had to fight to stay on the road it was so blustery.

Great riding. Recommend the Llyn y Sarnau road (next time) from/to Llanwrst - Swallow Falls. (Ack it would ruin the 'ear'.)
And if going the other way round, and ice creams in Beddgelert can be sacrificed, take the Nanmor valley (turning right about 3 miles SSE of Beddgelert, which avoids 11+km of A road, and would give a bit shape to the rear end.
Finally, a short 'out and back' to the campsite NW of Beddgelert would fashion a great tail.

Great recommendations, thanks. The Nantmor valley is lovely (not sure why I didn't think of it, but the A road was quiet on a weekday). I've been past Llyn Sarnau before, but from Trefiw (after doing some crazy out and back hills up the Conwy valley). It's a lovely "shortcut" 😉.

When I had my day on the Grand Colombier earlier this month I wasn't thinking at all about distance. But it turned out that including the descents, and the ride from my hotel in the morning I actually did 96km. I was so focused on the climbs that I didn't realise this at the time so I could have got June's ride in earlier by just riding a bit extra.

So a last minute effort from me today. I wanted to get off early so I wouldn't miss too much of the Tour. In the end last minute faffing prevented me from getting out before 7 but not too late. I did a generally lumpy ride over my usual bits of Kent, including Toy's Hill the hardest way (Puddledock Lane and Chart Lane if anyone's interested). Then off around Penshurst and Fordcombe before going back via Trevereux hill.

Perfect cycling weather. Blue skies but temperatures never going above 23 until the last hour or so. No wind.

My bottom bracket has become a bit wobbly.

@Sea of vapours always very jealous of the landmarks of your rides. This month is no exception
July
2nd - 164km / 3,100m (Great Dun Fell, Ravenstonedale, White Shaw Moss, Kingsdale)
Great Dun Fell is a great ride, spoilt only by the locked gates that need negotiating. I had leave from a family holiday in Reeth to drive over to it. Luckily the weather there was better than on the Moors

Thanks! I have a fortunate starting point.

The very top gate, to the actual site, doesn't really matter I think - especially since the cattle grid with the huge, elliptical bars is quite unpleasant to ride over. The single bar gate about 1km from the top is annoying though. Today, however, it was open. I don't think I've come across that one open before. The rather pointless gate half way up, redundantly in line with the cattle grid, was closed as usual. All four gates over White Shaw Moss were closed too, so I've opened a fair few gates today! Still, all great roads and those are very much minor quibbles :-)

Well the start of a return to fitness starts today as i had the bandages off so i can get on zwift albeit only on the tops and puppy paws, cant change gears properly on the right hand so i will just have to stick to flat pacer groups for now.
Gently does it. Target some open road time before the critical last few days of July.
Fit a bar end shifter to the left hand bar end and run to the RD.
Or if you have a bike for it, a down tube lever on the left but again routed across to the RD.
