It doesn't matter in the slightest if they are the "most famous".

Perhaps you could actually try READING what you were responding to, rather than just picking out one sentence and disregarding the rest?

Like he said, if you are brought up or live in a place with a different "Rovers", that is likely to be the first one you think of. If you support a different Rivers, that will also be one of the first you think of.

And if you were to ask 100 people at random, if they associate "Rovers" with any [particular team, I would be surprised if 50% said "Blackburn", even though they are the best known - probably 20-30% (if not more) would say "no" to that question.

I know what he meant! You coming from south Wales can think of Cardiff when City is mentioned, but most think of Manchester!

Exactly - except that I first think of Swansea City (Cardiff are closer, but I went to university in Swansea, and they are the only league team I have ever regularly gone to see - though not for many years now, they are still "my " team).

I suspect that outside the local area, Blackburn Rovers are generally just referred to as "Blackburn" rather than "Rovers."

The same principle applies to "City", "United" or "Town". When talking about a non-local club, you generally use the place name and only use the suffix to avoid confusion.

I was limiting it to League clubs

Thinking about it, I forgot Inverness Thistle in Scotland (and probably more).

And technically, Aston Villa fall under this list, as the suburb where they are based is just called Aston.

I did at first, but I suppose fairly well known none-league clubs count. Just as long as they aren't pub team level,;) so I'm now adding Blyth Spartans. :okay:

They don't

And you clearly don't know what I meant.

It's Inverness Caledonian Thistle. And we can add Heart of Midlothian to Accie's weird list.

You're clearly thinking of Hamilton "The Accies" Academical(s)! :okay:

Well, yeah, because I grew up on Scottish football. Interesting history behind the club name.

Another one for your weird list: Queen of the South - the only team named in the bible.

Oh, and another Rovers - Sligo. Figured you might have thought of them given their recent links with Stanley.

Yes, John Coleman being their manager quite a few years ago, taking their player Seamus Conneely to Accrington when he returned.
