I'm not sure about that. It might irritate other fans but there can be no doubt the world knows United as United.

No, I'm not having that. You've got Newcastle and Blades fans from Sheffield who'd disagree there for a start. When we had the Salford Apologists singing 'there's only one Yernighted' at our games against them, we'd sing back 'and that's a chocolate biscuit' relating to the famous big-selling chocolate biscuit at the time.

OK. OK. I just think it's a fact, most football fans immediately think of United no matter how much it upsets other clubs. That's my only point. I dislike United as much as the next man. Afraid I don't get the Salford remark nor the chocolate biscuit one, but then I don't follow non-league other than Chorley's results. Salford are Salford City.

Old Trafford is adjacent to Salford.

I think some people actually believe (wrongly) that Salford is where it is located.

And there used to be a chocolate biscuit (similar to penguin/club etc) called "United".

The naming thing has always interested me. There are several sides which I think of before Blackburn Rovers, I guess it just comes down to where you started being a football fan/where your loyalties lie.

Well you just have to be old enough to remember these then! They were very popular chocolate biscuits in the 80s/90s but for some reason aren't made any more. As for the Salford one, they don't play in Manchester (unless they have a derby match) do they and aren't 'united' as they didn't unite the city.

Did Manchester United unite the SE? 😉

Sack that so called manager now and don't give him a penny in wages etc for the rest of his contract! This business of managers being crap yet getting millions or whatever till the end of their contact, when they've been fired months or years before has to end! If I'd employed him I'd say "You're being dismissed immediately for breach of contract, without a penny in compensation, wages, bonuses etc etc! You broke the contact by being so crap that you have shown to have no intention of winning a football match, which is what you are employed to do! You can even sue me, but be warned I/we will counter sue which could cost you millions! The door is over there, close it on the way out"!!!
Southampton willingly offered him the contract for a fixed length of service, they are legally obliged to honour it. There is no get out clause depending on results and if they wanted one they should have written it in. It is the club's fault, they appointed him to manage a side who were not good enough to stay in the PL.

Like who, as surely after the fictitious Melchester Rovers, Blackburn are the world's most famous Rovers! In fact I think they might be the only Rovers to have played in the top flight of English football, unless there was a Rovers in the 1800's who also played in the top flight. Without looking it up, apart from Blackburn I can only think of Doncaster, Bristol, Tranmere, Forest Green and Albion and Raith in Scotland, with none of them coming close to Blackburn's success, since their formation in 1875. 🤔

How many clubs have unique names, as in the title used after the team's town or city, I wonder? I can think of Acrington Stanley, Crewe Alexandra, Plymough Argyle, Sheffield Wednesday, Hamilton Academical (I'm sure they used to be called Academicals 🤔) so far.🤔

It doesn't matter in the slightest if they are the "most famous".

Perhaps you could actually try READING what you were responding to, rather than just picking out one sentence and disregarding the rest?

Like he said, if you are brought up or live in a place with a different "Rovers", that is likely to be the first one you think of. If you support a different Rivers, that will also be one of the first you think of.

And if you were to ask 100 people at random, if they associate "Rovers" with any [particular team, I would be surprised if 50% said "Blackburn", even though they are the best known - probably 20-30% (if not more) would say "no" to that question.

Tottenham Hotspur are the most obvious other one.

Others are the MK Dons, Nottingham Forest, Leyton Orient, Preston North End.
