Please sir, please sir, may I be all four one day? ;)

Not at all- it's their choice. I wonder how many cyclists who ride without a helmet in Great Britain have actually studied the data or "evidence" from Australia or wherever, or do they they ride without a helmet because they always have ridden without one or do they not really "give it much thought"?
Unfortunately there are alot of people who don't agree and have even taken me to task over it (over other people not wearing them!!!)- my kids hate it when helmets get mentioned sometimes I manage not to react to the bait!.

I'm only guessing mind but I'd think it likely that more riders 'thoughtlessly' wear a helmet than 'thoughtlessly' don't.

It's ingrained in all TV programmes, adverts, information films, schools, the Highway Code, to such an extent that I'm considered a weirdo or a nutter for choosing to enjoy the wind in what's left of my hair. Seriously, I've had people pace me in a car and shout abuse/ridicule at me for not wearing one. I am not alone in such experiences.

I haven't damaged my head In a car or a pub or walking down the street! You have no idea how I ride or how I live my life yet you dictate to me where my risks are? I will decide when I need to wear one.

whilst the choice part of your pointis fine, you should (in the sense it of it being sensible, rather than telling you what to do!) really judge on odds rather than outcomes. In poker, which in a sense this is, experts ask if they made right call win or lose, not whether they won or lost on that hand.

ok I'm happy to accept those risks for the limited miles I cover in my vehicles or walking if I bang my head whilst doing those activities it's my look out, however I'm not prepared to take the chance when I'm cycling.

Yes but in my mind it's win-win I cannot lose, if helmets don't do any good then I've just got a pointless hat on my head - oh well never mind, but if they can do some good and most people agree that they can do some good then hey, I've got a helmet on my head, what's not to like?
The car/pedestrian analogy I just don't buy because it just isn't real world and untill the general populus starts wearing helmets for driving cars or walking I won't even consider it just like you won't.
And by the way folks we've been here before about 3-4 weeks ago and this same analogy didn't go very far that time either, round and round we go.

I think they call that cognitive dissonance.

No quite - I'm doing No in November and haven't taken a drop since 30th October... ;)

But I am eligible for a former employers pension in a few weeks...

You choose not to wear a helmet when you at greater risk, but insist on using a helmet when the risk is reduced.

So you insist on protecting your head when it is least at risk?
