However, not all my rides warrant helmet use ( subject to my risk assessment of the ride in question) and (shock horror) I do ride a lot of my trail rides / park rides / 'traffic free' routes etc. without a lid. I've never found a long road ride etc. to pass the 'should I wear a lid or not' part of the risk assessment. So I've never done these rides without a lid, since the time I didn't risk asses the ride, and found out the hard way, why that's not always a great idea. I use a fairly simple model for my assessments, and thus far, it seems to have worked well.
Absolutely unbelievable post. Does your arrogance know no bounds? So it's ok for YOU to make a risk assessment with regards to whether a particular ride needs a plastic hat or not, but when others make that same risk assessment and choose NOT to wear a helmet they are fools, trolls, idiots, members of the Darwin club, or accidents waiting to happen?
What about those of us who have been saying for a long time that we do the same risk assessment - and have assessed the risk as negligible; and even for that negligible risk, a lightweight plastic shell lined with polystyrene meeting a basic safety rating isn't going to be of much help?

But how can you do risk assessment around the use of a piece of kit where there is no substantial evidence as to what level of mitigation it will provide? You may as well just carry a rabbit's foot. (although as has been pointed out a few times over the last 334 pages, this isn't particularly beneficial to the rabbit)

Couldn't you just carry a rabbit then? He might enjoy the journey.

Somebody is bound to say it, so it may as well be me.
That's all very well, but where do you get a rabbit helmet?

Oh, you meant a helmet FOR a rabbit? I'd expect an x-small pet helmet would fit - thank you Americans and your bizarre obsession for anthropomorphising animals!

My helmet pads stink, I think it would be safer for others if I didn't use it

On the occasions when I have worn a helmet, one of the most annoying aspects about it is the sweaty pads. Horrible putting a helmet back on after a stop, when the pads are cold and wet with stale sweat xx(. Just another reason why I don't normally wear one; thanks for the reminder!

The salt in the sweat filled pads in my helmet which was washed out by the rain nearly caused me to abandon a ride one time. That would have been about ten years ago and is probably the last time I wore a helmet on the road.
