The Doolough Valley where I ate my lunch today. Such natural beauty, peace and serenity yet the tourist board explains why as many as 600 people died here during the famine in the 1840s. A sobering thought  Rejoice and give thanks for my corned beef sandwiches and bar of Fry's Chocolate Cream. I am fortunate to have never known hunger or starvation. Spare a thought for those in less fortunate parts of the world.

Wow

That would be about one third of my entire winters leek crop in one go .

A delivery?

Or are they just selling them off the pile??
Apparently the old-school Chinese buy their leeks like this. Farmers come in from the countryside with literally lorry loads of leeks, and sell them off the pavements. This was not the only pile of leeks in town - several farmers had done the same. The older Chinese buy enough leeks to last them the winter, and store them in a cool place.

The younger ones just go to the shops and buy them when they need them.
