Hmmm - 417-7. Beginning to look like Cook's (?) decision to invite the Australians to bat may be back-firing.

With the series won, I'd like to have a more positive approach. Putting them in on what seems nothing worse than a good Test wicket shows more than a little caution, maybe a lack of confidence, even!

Oh well, we'll soon know which England batsmen are in form.

Aussies 481 all out

Another good day for Aussies – patient batting – by Smith 143 and Voges 76 – a flurry of wickets from Moeen before lunch - but a steady accumulation by Smith and Starc after lunch – England not bowling badly and gradually winckling them out

Now the interesting bit to see how Englands batters do on this surface

I think its easy in hindsight to say the pitch was going to favour batting - Alec Stewart said it was a good un - but pre-match it was touted as being bowler friendly - none of the pundits that had been and prodded the pitch were critical of the decision - but yes at the time of the toss I thought it was a cautious decision.

Just realised that Adam Lyth looks like Oz Clarke.

Hmm, Lyth proving very little in his favour again today (though agree he's good in the slips, it's not really enough). I shan't mind too much if he's dropped cos I can never remember if it's pronounced Lith or Lithe.

Think it's Lyth, as in Blythe (without pronouncing the 'e', if that helps).

But he's from Yorkshire, so it could be anything.
