The 5km Parkrun thread

I thought I'd start this for the benefit for any Parkrunners, or just runners in general and also for anyone interested in Parkrun to perhaps get some tips, hints or motivation.

I started doing my local Parkrun last year, but I only did a handful before I fell out of the habit and that was that

Anyhoo, a new year brought a new start and I returned last January to find the numbers has swollen considerably and I really got into it, but after doing a few organised 10k runs around February/March/April as well I seemed to hit a wall again and just stopped going. I'm not selling this well am I?

So today, 30/6/12 I started back. I think I probably did too much too soon earlier in the year, and I'm back now determined to keep at it and get my PB down as well.

My current PB is around 28 mins for Parkrun's 5km, (I'm no serious athlete by any stretch ), but today after my lay off I puffed over the line in a mapmyrun time of 31:23. I'm happy enough with this considering where I am right now health/weight wise, and I know it will improve quite quickly, (initially at least).

So there you have it, I've laid my Parkrun soul bare and welcome any other Parkrunners to do the same. The Bolton Parkrun is having a beginners week next Saturday. There will be pacers for anything from 25 to 50 minutes, so it's a great time for anyone who may have been considering it to get along and have a go.

It's always amazed me the diversity of people who attend ours, there are club runners, kids, speed walkers, young, old and all ages in between, and even dogs on occasion.

Hopefully this thread will run and run, (groan;)), and if it inspires just one more person to give it a go then I'll consider it a success.

For more details and to find a Parkrun near you just visit; PARKRUN

That's a neat idea. I'm almost tempted.

Except the York one is on a Saturday morning, and I'm away many weekends....

At the moment, I can generally jog for a couple of hundred yards in my workwear (steel toed boots!) before I have to give up and walk again.... So I'm a fair way off even 5km!

I think you'll be surprised how much faster you'll be and how much farther you'll go with trainers on instead of your hob nail boots Arch

True. Although I'd still be carrying a fair bit of extra lard....;)

I used to jog once a week, for a while, probably 5km-ish, but getting on for 15 or 20 years ago... I'm also quite flatfooted. I envy those people who seem to dance along on their toes, but I'm more the elephant style of running.

You and me both when it comes to extra lard and running jogging like an elephant

I tend to get too competitive with things, but I just want to do Parkrun now for fun. The fun goes when you're constantly pushing, striving and fighting to get better IMO.

I used to do the Newcastle Parkrun - PB 23.02 - however , due to medical issues starting 18 months ago AND, my wife running it every Saturday morning (I get to look after the kids), I've not been back.
My time now would be nearer 30 mins.

The Parkrun s excellent, free, web accessed ranking tables and you can do it how and a fast as you like.

There's a woman does it every week with her child/baby in one of those buggies that converts from a bike trailer, also a guy who runs it with his Dalmation.

I signed up to parkrun a while ago, but I haven't got around to going yet. It's a toss up between Bolton and Heaton Park for me. The killer is it being 9am on a Saturday! I hate running fasted, so it means getting up 1 - 2 hours prior to get some food down. I also like to use the weekends to do a longer run, and with it being 5km, it's hard to get motivated for it.

Enough with the bloody excuses, I really should head down to this and stop complaining. Thanks for the reminder, i'll dig up my barcode and made see you at Bolton in the future.

The park run events always looked good to me when I was more into running, but the start time was too early for me and Saturday was my long run day, so it didnt fit in and seemed a lot of hassle for what at the time was about 24 mins of running.

Got to admit the time isn't ideal for me as I'd rather run later in the day, but the whole Parkrun package over rides it IMO.

The organisation, camaraderie, electronic timing etc. I'd rather get up early to do Parkrun than run alone later in the day.

So come on Eddie lets see you there next week

I'm sat at Leverhulme Park in Bolton waiting for this Parkrun to start at 9am.

I thought it might get cancelled after yesterday's deluge, but the sun is actually out!

I'm really looking forward to it this week. I'm feeling a lot better already on my new eating regime, (it's not a diet), a lot of the sluggishness has gone and I'm really feeling up for it.

Good luck to any other Parkrunners taking part anywhere this weekend

My map my run app failed to start so I don't know my time yet, but I was ahead of the 30 minute pacer so it's a step up from last week, hard work though when your my size though:heat:
