I have been mulling over some sort of bad wether protocol, but as it's only the 7th it's certainly not time for any change of direction yet . But as only 5 of us have a ride in so far it would be a very poorly populated challenge if the weather doesn't improve so it's in the back ground but as yet I have no idea what form it would be in

I feel a bit rough, so I probably wouldn't have ridden much this week anyway. Let's hope that this is one of the last cold snaps of the winter. Probably a forlorn hope, given that we aren't even halfway through yet...

I would just go up and down the local valley A-roads, which in all but exceptional conditions should be kept ice-free. The problem in the past has been traversing a few hundred metres of icy back roads and pavements to even get to those A-roads!

First year and first month I join in - and it’s all gone pear shaped 🤣🤣🤣 I fully appreciated January might have been cold and wet when I signed up. But I’m not riding in deep, wide-spread frost or worse. Or a storm ! (Last Sat and Sun respectively). **And work long hours Mon-Fri.

But as said - a long-long way to go. And if push comes to crunch; personally I’ll do 50k one night if I have to - and conditions allow safely.

Plenty of days in the month yet folks 😁

Yes, not pleasant! I have hardly been out of the house for days. I had to go out this afternoon on foot though to buy some shopping at Aldi, and score some drugs from my local dealer***.

The icy pavements were very iffy, and the back street road surfaces were not that great either. I normally overtake most other pedestrians but I slowed right down today and was overtaken by a couple of brisk-strolling walkers who then almost face-planted in front of me.

It looks like it will be getting warmer on Monday though so maybe I will get my 50 in next week?

While I can't comment for the entirety of the country, at least in my neck of the woods the forecast for next weekend (e.g. 18th / 19th) doesn't look too bad. Overnight temps of 4-5 C, so there shouldn't be ice or frost on the roads first thing, then a max day temp of 8-9 C which while cold, is beatable by adding an extra layer or two.

But yeah, it looks like this weekend is a bit of a write off and will be reserved for indoor cycling only.

I’ve never labelled myself a super keen or ‘proper cyclist’. More someone who really enjoys some local’ish exploring by bicycle. But by cripes I’m missing riding 😳 I’m just not sure it’s been entirely safe. Or is going to be - even this afternoon.

Best err on the side of caution. There would have been a time I wouldn't have thought twice about going out in this weather. I'm much older now and I don't bounce as easy.

Yes, I’m really frustrated with the ice. There’s an outside chance I might get out tomorrow but sleet later on frozen ground might scupper that. Realistically it’s looking like Monday commuting when the rain will hopefully have washed away the ice.
