Me, so long as I have a police force where senior officers have lied or cannot be bothered doing the work they are paid to do along with those on the street! telling me that what I had done to me is part of the job, I'm willing to defend myself. If those who are paid to uphold the laws of this land cannot be bothered their a.se, then where does that leave the rest of us!!
Or you could stop buying the redtops and reflect that our bit of the world is a much safer place than they would have you believe. Unless you mix with the people who cause it, your chances of being threatened with violence in the street or at home are absolutely minimal.

Silly thread frankly. As has been said your best bet is just to let johnny thief get away. Only time I would do anything is if he tried anything with my partner or the baby. Frankly any thief who broke in here would not find much other than a vinyl collection and a tape deck to nick which would be amusing. Not to mention burglary barely happens here.

Surely it boils down to this: a cricket bat is a piece of sporting apparatus. A cricket bat with 6 inch nails driven through it medieval stylee is an offensive weapon.

I've just rung Niton who inform me that any online order made without a Police or other Crown agency purchase order will receive a cancellation email.

When did B&Q sell telescopic batons?

A cricket bat is sporting equipment but if you intend to use it to hit someone then it becomes an offensive weapon.

This.

It's no exaggeration at all to say that over 90% of the 'victims' I deal with brought it on themselves. This isn't the 'brought it on themselves' by the innocent householder leaving their door unlocked, this is people willingly acting criminally, or happy to associate with criminals who then come crying to the police when things go wrong.

Many years ago when the Trafford Centre was first built there was an indoor market place where John Lewis is now. There was a tool stall there and I went in to do some shopping one Saturday.
I bought a tree felling axe and the stall holder apologised for not having a bag to put in in.
No problem, I'll just take its it is. So out I walked, back towards my car in the Regent carpark, with the axe over my shoulder.

Walking back through the Trafford Centre towards Debenhams was an interesting experience, the crowds parted like the Red Sea for Moses.

Was that because you were pulling funny faces and shouting, "here's Johnny!"

If someone breaks into my house they better be prepared to leave in a box.

The best weapon is the one you never have to use.
no idea what i'd do in my house, i have a number of bushcraft knives that are exceptionally sharp but i don't fancy that if i'm honest. the best thing i could do is just come running down nekid and start screaming like a banshee. they'd soon scarper.

Do you have a dog called Wellard? I can appreciate why you would think that. but at the same time is it really worth getting yourself killed over a telly or your car keys. Is it bollocks frankly. Now if me or my family were at risk of violence obviously I would retaliate but buggered if i'm going to get myself killed over a telly or whatever

In reply to asc1951 a teenager burgled a house in leicster and was disturbed by a 55 year old woman who was living on her own , he assaulted her by knocking her to the ground and stamping on her chest caus ing her sternum bone to break and puncture her lung!! so you feel sorry for the half witted teenager as he didnt get all his haul away!! Makes my blood boil at such a cowardly act, shame he didnt break into a house my mate lives in ! He would have the finest beating he has ever had in his poor unfortunate life he lives as my mate is trained in self defense no weapons needed. Their are total scumbags and dont deserve any sympathy if they burgle for a living.

One other aspect of 'using a weapon to defend your property' is that the criminal probably doesn't care, has nothing to lose, and is used to violence being part and parcel of life. That is rarely so of the householder.

I know that if 'push came to shove' it is highly unlikely that I will out hit a person who is more used to hitting and taking as a way of life, whatever my weapon. However, I can probably chop logs and hammer nails more effectively then the criminal can.
It just isn't in my psyche to bash someone's brains out for the sake of £10 worth of electronics, and it probably isn't in their psyche to do a hard day's work.

I faced a fair amount of 'violence' from my peers as a child and young adult. My greatest defense was being able to outrun them.
