Honestly in this world in which we live in, its a crime to defend yourself these days !! if you act in self defense " its ooh poor burglar he got hurt ! surely if he was tooled up and carrying a weapon ie screwdriver knife etc there is intent to use these against the person who owns the house he is breaking into! 9 times out of 10 these scumbags know there are vunerable people :case the joint! and in my opinion if they are on the recieving end of commiting a cowardly act , good on the person who had the courage to defend their property and themselves. Should be given a medal in my opinion. Hope you dont think this is a personal attack on you its not meant to be , just my opinion.of the low lifes who commit these crimes. its awfull being a victim of this crime as I have been one.

Me too, mate. I've been burgled several times. I've seen plenty of burglars going through the courts, too, and most of them are half-witted little tosspots, usually with a drug habit. I still don't think it's a crime that justifies a response of extreme violence, unless violence is offered by the burglar - which is not often the case.

Can you show us where any of us were condoning burglary or feeling sorry for burglars?

It's an emotive subject, but what you and old Mohammed "I'm 'ard" Bruce Lee have failed to grasp is that Martin was enquiring about carrying a telescopic baton on his bike to use in road rage incidents to defend himself against people he was planning to attack when they pissed him off. Burglaries and spotty teens hadn't yet entered the debate.

The OP was a semi serious question. Twice in the last month, I've found myself in a situation where my size hasn't proved to be intimidating enough. Nothing has come of these situations but....

As SWMBO keeps pointing out, I'm not getting any younger and it's quite a few years since I hung up my black belt for the last time. I must admit I am very prone to putting my bike down and yanking on car door handles so maybe calmness should be my aim.

This is a far better step on the road to Karma than getting hold of weapons likely to land you in Crown Court on a GBH rap.

I can understand road rage, but you have to ask yourself, if you're getting so wound up on the roads that you are yanking on car door handles to confront the drivers you may need to take a bit of a look at the root causes of all that anger. Shiite driving may not be that root cause.

Then again walking home, late at night, past a building that had been set alight(on the other side of the road) & with the fire service in the process of putting it out. I had two lumps of a concrete slab thrown at my head, both missed. Result of the failure to hit me with the lumps thrown, led to me getting a concrete slab in the back.
All I was doing was going home, down a main road, with not a word said to anyone.

Local one did so just before the store relocated. Along with stab vests, handcuffs & a host of other clothing items used both by security & the police.
Huddersfield one was selling them long before then.

What a society we live in now, when I was young my grandfather used to put a key on a string inside his letterbox so I could let myself in , times are changing and not for the better methinks. you had respect for the police, older people and your parents too. Now we are having debates on carrying telescopic battons to protect ourselves against scum that carry knives, stun guns and probably guns too.

I currently cycle on much quieter roads than I used to. It just makes it more annoying when someone endangers my life to gain a couple of seconds. I'm definitely trying to count to 10 more this week.

And cubist is right the question was about putting it on my bike although I did mention it being at home as the law may have been different for that.

No, we were having a debate on whether it was legal to own a baton to attach to a bike, because the OP no longer felt that his martial arts would make him the winner when he confronts motorists. No one mentioned knives or stun guns or firearms.

The debate has branched off into such realms of fantasy that I am seriously wondering whether someone hasn't been putting 'shrooms in the Cyclechat water tanks.

Nope, from my understanding of the helpful responses, as soon as you intend to use it as a weapon it'll become illegal. I suppose if you're taking a beating and say you instinctively used it to protect yourself you'd be ok. However my ideas were purely offensive /deterrent based
