Sorry Randy. It’s doing this annoying thing getting to end of the update and then declaring it a failure. I’ll keep trying. This is attempt number 3 now. If I succeed I’ll join the ride you’re in.

It’s beaten me I’m afraid mate.

I’m going to go onto rouvy for a bit. Just blowing the cobwebs really anyway. I’ll try Bkool again tomorrow

I tried to keep high cadence but was a struggle on some of the climbs.
My sram gearing gives me a 1.1 ratio in easiest gear but couldn't spin on some of the higher % gradients.
Did 12,000m elevation in a week

Being a heavy sod, I used a gear calculator to work out ratios I needed to maintain a high cadence and then further easier gears for when really tired.

My setup ended with triple crank 48/36/26. With an 11-40 cassette. All on Di2

Most of riding was on the 36t crank, but I could drop down to 26t crank and spin on extremely steep gradients if needed.

For what it’s worth when I’ve gone to the mountains most recently I’ve used a semi compact 52/36 and a cassette with a 34t on the back. I feel like whatever you have there’s always a point where you’re clicking the shifter hoping for one more!

Knee trouble is a bit of a mine field though Shim. Lots of people will have opinions. Often based on their own history. But it probably won’t relate to you. Maybe the climbing exposed a failing in your technique or cadence that got exaggerated with the elevation you did. Maybe you could have had a better recovery process between days. Maybe your bike fit is creating / exposing a problem with your knee. I’m not sure you’ll get the answer unless it persists really.

Me and lee cycled the length of the Pyrenees a couple of years ago from coast to coast. My knee was so bad in the months before hand I only really got about 5-6 weeks training in before we went. But when we were actually on the tour my knee was surprisingly good. I was taking ibuprofen a couple of times a day to avoid swelling. And I had a couple of cold baths too. I was a bit nervous all week that it could go at anytime. But it was ok. But then other times I’ve just twisted my leg slightly walking along and I’ve been in pain for weeks afterwards.

You need to gear down to help protect your knees - This was my Tenerife climb Los Cristianos to Vilaflor on day 1 I averaged 86 rpm going up
