I would imagine your winters are more severe than ours in that part of Germany?
I've actually bought a pair for the MTB, but whether I a) get around to fitting them and b) actually go out in icy conditions remains to be seen.Spiked tyres are the answer.
Last tram round these parts left Masons Green, on St Valentine’s Day 1939.The local tram company has a scraper unit that runs around the network making a foul noise. Keeps the track clean though.

Can be a bit heavy up here, we're 400m above sea level, not quite high enough that snow chains are mandatory for cars but high enough that you have to carry them just in case. On occasion the roads get closed because the plough gets stuck. A friend went snowboarding down one...
