I'm reminded that I was living in North Devon when the great blizzard of 1977 (I think) struck the south west, on just about this exact date. We had drifts up to the top of the upstairs windows. They helicoptered my mum off because she ran a local cottage hospital, and we didn't see her again for 3 weeks. Three weeks in which us three unattended teenagers behaved ourselves absolutely impeccably.
