Afternoon Bobby M. :hello:

How long you been a Grid Iron fan ?

Used to do a bit (in the street at night) between say 13 & 15 years old.

A mate was really good, but then he was good at everything except football, he was 6ft 4" with massive mitts & could throw arrow straight for what seemed like miles.

He had the Pro helmet & pads, the lot & played amateur American Football (there were a few teams back then).

This was all in the mid 80's when (as you remember) it was huge over here with the kids.

I used to stay up, watching NFL in my bedroom, listening out for my Dad (Step Dad) coming up the stairs, then turn it off quick.

Never got away with it though, telly used to take about 3 mins to reduce down to a little spot in the middle.

49'ers for me, had the best quarter back going.

Do you remember "The Refrigerator" ?

William Perry
I used to like the Patriots back then.
Joe Montana and Steve Young were the 2 quarter backs for the 49's were'n they.
The British scene was quite popular back in the day and there were quite a few teams. Fylde Falcons up your way wasn't it?
Went to watch Birmingham Bulls beat the London Olympians in the British final at QPR's ground about 87 or 88 at a guess.

Isn't it Burnley that have the largest home support from the town in which they play. Used to be.
Funny how many Man U fans seem to have Brum addresses and get in home parts of ground, which results in all sorts of goings on when the inevitably score. More so than any other visiting support, Blues included
Maybe (Burnley) I dunno, not as well up on it all as I used to be.

You can get in (almost) any part of any ground if you have money/connections or shear will power.

Sometimes the only way to get in is to be a 5 minute home fan.

Been in the Kop at Anfield, the Kippax at Maine Road, away end at Wigan & Bolton old & new grounds etc, gotta be done if you want to see your team away from home sometimes.

These days I am priced out of football (Premiership) & time poor anyway so I don't hear accents at games.

I remember there being quite a lot of 'New' Chelsea fans in the NW when they were dominant & there are plenty of 'New' Man City fans these days too.

Used to meet a lot of Man City fans on match days who were actually hoitey toitey well to do students, as (back then) it was "hip" for the students to support the underdogs, I think most of them just went for a Pimms & a gossip.

Just smiling about Keano's comments about prawn sandwich brigade.
So true nowadays

Manchester had a team (memory shot so would take a google).

Dan Marino was another all time great QB, many argued of who was the better, Montana or Marino.

Yeah you're right, grid iron thrived in the 80's, big amateur scene with lots of upstarts.

Around that time I was playing a lot of R.L, football & Sprint Club at the track with some weekend cricket in the summer, so never gave it a proper go.

It was fun in the street at night though, especially getting chased off after an errant pass slammed a car panel.

I miss standing up.

All the "sit down" brigade get on my wick, especially when a goal looks likely.

Stretford End still don't sit down, none of them, ever.

Capacity has been capped because of it I heard, don't know why, they all have tickets & still occupy the same amount of space.
