Well you learn something new every day. Apparently the term "letting the cat out of the bag" is an old navy term, and derives from a time when they would take the cat-o-nine tails out of its bag before a sailor was whipped.
How did you find that out?
As in what were you searching for.

Same implement gives us the saying "Not enough room to swing a cat".

The navy also gave us brass monkey's.

I wasn't. Rory Mcgrath is on TV in a programme called bloody Britain. This episode is about the British navy throughout history
