Let me guess - you don't know anything about art, but you know what you like?

I enjoy some modern art.
But lots of what we would probably call modern art is now half a century old. So it’s no longer modern.
Tracey Emin’s bed and Damien Hursts shark are both last century.
Andy Warhol’s soup cans are 65 years old. Hardly modern art?

Hardly art.

Why is it not art?

Visual art exists to convey what ever reality the artist so chooses. Just because you don't understand the message doesn't make it any less valid.

I can't stand rap, but there's no way I could claim it's "hardly music." That would be a preposterous contention.

Without wishing to be unkind, you are what the art community decries as a philistine (im not making that up, thats the term they use) - someone with very vocal opinions but no actual knowledge upon which to base them.

If you don't understand the message and thus don't like it as a consequence then fair enough, but just say so in unambiguous terms instead of attacking the the very medium of which you have no understanding.

I know very little about modern art.
But I think the urinal is definitely art.
It’s DaDaism which was formed in central
Europe as a nonsense movement directly as a response to the institutional utter madness of the 1st world war.
1917 is a big clue.
What is more silly? A urinal on a wall as art or millions of pointlessly dead soldiers?

Huge array of art from all over the world covering different genres and styles in an incredible building made accessible and free for all to enjoy….what a load of rubbish

Threads like these serve as a great reminder and indication of closed minded luddites.

No need for puerile games.

Art is what the artist decides it is.

As above, If you don't understand the message or meaning then say so instead of trotting out a load of pap that is simply digging you into an ever deeper hole of ignorance.

And no, I do not like all art, but just because I don't like it doesn't make any less artistic. I don't like VW Golf's, but there's no denying they are automobiles.

Art should show talent and craft. When I visited the Tate Modern, the only evidence I saw of either was some crochet work - although the exhibition of growing troughs holding soil from different areas of London might meet the second of the two. I did hear queries regarding some architrave left against a wall, and whether it was an ‘installation’.
The children’s area showed more ‘art’ that the exhibitions - I shudder to think how much the public purse is subsidising the place.

Art should show talent and craft.
That maybe what you want from. Others may want to see something that makes them think, or provokes feeling, or challenges perceptions. You are justifying why it is wrong by overlaying your own rules.

Food should be cooked for a long time and make you full.
Films should be easy to follow and make you happy.
Conversations should be interesting and structured.
