Blimey! Rim wear, impact, random failure?

Not sure why you need rescuing, a bit of duct tape should have that back together in no time.
Hit a bit of a bump and instantly blew the tyre, the rim didn't have much wear less than a year old. It's quite a clean break but to be fair it might be my bike telling me to loose some timber!

'kinell!

Should never happen IMO

Has it failed at the join?

Oh it does happen.
Happened to me a good few years ago. Its just simple high mileage brake pad wear that causes it. And a lack of attention to wear
One of the reason's I swapped over to disk braked bikes for the commute. I was going through rims at a pair every 18-24 moths.

Second time this week on the way into work I have had a Owl fly next to me for a couple of minutes. I assume its using me to scare mice etc into moving as I ride past.

Bet that's a fantastic experience - I sometimes get similar with bats along the tow path; presumably looking to feast on the perpetual swarm of flies following me..

Not significantly worn according to OP.

It is.
A few years ago some of us were on an Audax in deepest, darkest Kent when a white Barn owl flew out of the trees and along the road in front of us for a good few yards. Magnificent

Yup - love the little interactions with wildlife afforded by quiet travel in natural environments
