Plugs work very well on even big holes (3mm!). Very quick to do, takes longer to put air valve on than to plug the hole. I no longer use TL tyres (had crap ones, because of wall sweating and very squirmy). My worm kit still goes out and gets used a fair bit, more so than my patch kit does! - that might say something although the sample size is a bit small.

But you need to get the tyre out to put the tube in, and we couldn't get the tyre out. A worm kit would have likely worked, and doesn't need the tyre out.
And your tyre will likely have several thorns inside that the sealant took care of and you were unaware of some so small you not see or feel the need to check ....until the tube develops several holes ?? So then it's out with the patches...and all in you had sealant tubes patches ...best to choose which method you want

Why is it that every thread that mentions tubeless tyres, even in a very specific way like this one (about "sweating") always has to end up with a debate on the merits and demerits of tubeless?

I guess it's a rule of Cyclechat.

Just as every thread involving GPS has to have someone going on about how they owned a Garmin once and it was the worst experience of their life ever and Wahoo is best.

I believe it is Section 4 Para 3 of the Tubeless Posts Act: All the other paragaraphs detail the situations [basically - any thread about tyres used with inner-tubes, or p*nctures] where someone must post:
"One word: Tubeless"
Allowable alternatives are:
"why don't you want to go tubeless?"
and
"This wouldn't happen with tubeless. Just saying  "
