Strava upsets folk again 🙄

Yep Garmin could do the same and basically end Strava.

As much as I like Strava I’m into the Garmin connect & if Strava get more silly I’d be happy to stick with Garmin.
I hear people talking about people’s Strava on group rides and it can be quite toxic. One guy winds up a club member but yet he won’t unfollow him. You can’t really KOM hunt with e bikes in the wrong category. I know somone who’s recorded he’s holiday trips in a passenger jet and that’s all his best stats. Maybe soon Strava will have had its day.

Key to me is that the route planner must work with the veloviewer (or squadrats) plug in which so far I've only found Garmin and Strava that do so.

Brouter.de web client set to fast bike, low traffic with a VeloViewer overlay from vv.fork.pl works well for me.

Quite a lot of phone based trackers. On Android you can share location with basic Google Maps, or Whatsapp. There are dedicated tracker apps like Glympse. If you have a Garmin GPS it has live tracking (as long as it's not too old/basic), as do Wahoos too I think.

The live tracking from a Garmin or Wahoo (or other make) rely on a phone connection though, because they need a data connection.

I've downloaded, transferred all my data from Strava. I now run Garmin Connect in parallel with free Strava.

Coz I use a Garmin watch, the history and integration has updated my metrics

Well thanks to Strava (well, just thanks to this thread actually) I dusted off my half-finished RWGPS-driven Veloviewer alternative and actually got some maps working. Hooray. Still a load more work needed.

Or trying to display too many colours on a ZX Spectrum; a max of two colours within any 8x8 pixels, i seem to remember, resulting in all sorts of 'colour bleed' when sprites got too close.

Basically if you choose to make your data public within VeloViewer you will have to reconfirm that choice every so often rather than just the once. I can live with that!

You know what? I'm going to guess not many. A few, for sure, but I think the vast, vast majority of people just aren't interested, and most of those who do care one way or the other would find it too inconvenient to switch to another provider (where they don't have lots of "friends" who will given them kudos for all their rides).

That's short term. But in the longer term all of the app providers will be busily writing connectors to Garmin and Wahoo and so on to cut out the troublesome middleman. And in the long term that may undermine Strava's position as the go-to data source and could discourage new subscribers.

I would agree particularly for 3rd parties charging subscriptions for their systems. If they've "got away with it" this time in effect they've had a warning that their income is vulnerable to an unreliable player (Strava). They know the direction Strava want to move in so any awake 3rd parties will make alternative options to protect their service income.

Blimey, £17. At that price I'd expect Nigella Lawson to personally deliver it on Christmas Day.
For slightly over £7 you can buy a SIS bidon (800ml) from Decathlon and have it delivered next day.

Or you can an older design from Amazon for just £5, if you have Prime.
