Well thanks to Strava (well, just thanks to this thread actually) I dusted off my half-finished RWGPS-driven Veloviewer alternative and actually got some maps working. Hooray. Still a load more work needed.

I don't know what Wandrer is, but they have an update on the impact of the changes

They're looking at adding alternative sources to do whatever it is they do

I use wandrer and like that it has some similarities to veloviewer maps. But instead of collecting map tiles, it tracks the % of roads you've covered in any particular area, and updates after every ride.

Tells me things like I've cycled 11% of all the roads in Lambeth (for example).

And oh boy did i get into a boring habit of cycling the same roads again and again, but wandrer tells me i'm addressing that fairly well, as 900 miles this year has been on roads I've not previously cycled.

Okay, it's data for the sake of it, i cant think of any useful application. I love it!

Sounds fun. I actually do that manually by examining my RWGPS heatmap. I'm on a mission to ride all the lanes in my rideable range. So I'm excluding urban areas and big A roads, and trying to cover every other road. Makes route planning more interesting.

Unfortunately I have an awful chesty cough and the weather is foul. So I'm being lazy this weekend.

If Garmin could sort their route planner out I'd ditch Strava completely.
Try a 3rd party one. There are several but I ended-up always using http://cycle.travel. Free. Creates good routes for cycling (as in choses roads well suited to cycling), Covers a fair amount of the world, loads of info/flexibility. Allows routes it creates to be manually adjusted. Allows you to select the surface (Paved only or any surface). Allows you to prefer official cycle routes, etc., etc.

I've use it for quite a few years mainly on multi-month cycle touring trips (planning tomorrow's route each evening). Useful on camping touring trips as press a button to find accommodation close yo your route and another button to filter that to only show campsites.

Register (free) and link to Garmin a/c and use cycle.travel to create a route, press "Send to GPS" button and it arrives on your Garmin GPS (easy, one button press).

nb I'm just a user of the site, nothing to do with the site.

Key to me is that the route planner must work with the veloviewer (or squadrats) plug in which so far I've only found Garmin and Strava that do so.

Only reason I use Strava rather than some other one - is so my wife can see where I am if she needs to know

Does anything else allow that??

Quite a lot of phone based trackers. On Android you can share location with basic Google Maps, or Whatsapp. There are dedicated tracker apps like Glympse. If you have a Garmin GPS it has live tracking (as long as it's not too old/basic), as do Wahoos too I think.

Garmin GPSs do. I've not used it but I think it's called LiveTrack - You enable it, it gives you a web link you can pass to others and that links to a web page that displays your real-time location on a map.

If you are Apple or iPhone based just enable location sharing and your partner can use "Find My" to see where you are. I'd be surprised if Android does not have a virtually identical feature.

The garmin thingy automatically sends an email with a link to your nominated individuals when you start recording a ride. It switches off when you stop recording.

Not giving that to our lass, I'd have to stop popping into McDonalds for a coffee towards end of the ride.

Funny thing - only time my wife has ever rung me when I was out on a ride was one of the few times I have stopped and was chatting to a woman!!!

turned out that Strava sent her a message that I had not moved for x minutes (quite a while) and she was worried I had fallen off or something

Turned out that GPS on my phone had decided to stop working and it looked to Strava like I was stationary half way across a bridge

or so she claimed!!!
( nice looking woman as well - not that I mentioned that when I got home!!!)
