I originally posted this picture in the 'please be seated' thread ~ but notice the sign on the left, advising potential visitors that this is not the way to Raby Castle. This appeared fairly recently and seemed a bit odd, as Scotland Lane is just a narrow single track road leading down to another road off to a few barn conversions and then gravel tracks across fields to a couple of farms. You could theoretically get to Raby Castle via this route but you'd need a proper off-roader or a tractor, be prepared to open numerous gates whilst completely doubling back in the direction you came from, and of course trespassing as there's no right of way over most of the way you'd be going. Turns out that someone in our village had been stopped by a very puzzled, well spoken lady asking why the sign was there when her sat-nav was directing her down that way! Google maps bugger-up?

Google maps things that the A road is the way to go. Could be Tom Tom or Apple maps? Or she could have had Google Maps on Pedestrian or cycle mode and be approaching from Lane Head direction, in which case it would direct through East Shotton camp site.

I'm not au fait with these new fangled navigation systems so I'm not sure about it myself, but once at the end of Scotland Lane East Shotton camp site is the way you could go to get to the castle, but it's not a public right of way so I'm surprised that any system would direct you down there. The vast majority of the Raby Castle grounds have no rights of way through them, which is a shame as there'd be some cracking bike rides to be had through the wood and down to the castle. I'm pretty sure that East Shotton camp site is owned / used by the scouts & guides association, so also private.

I suspect that's saying that the road to the right is closed, so traffic wanting to go that way should follow the diversion to the left. However, if you have already followed the diversion from the other side of the road closure, if you follow the diverted traffic sign you will end up this side of the closure. Which may or may not be where you wanted to be.

We get that around here. Rival gangs of road menders Go about littering the place with misleading or confusing signs.
Then clear off and leave random signs to perpetuate the chaos

Alright, sometimes, for locals, but a nightmare with eastern European lorry drivers thinking they are taking a sneaky shirt cut.
