In middle school (between ages 7 and 12) I recall we had spitting contests in the playground. The general winning technique was usually to purse the lips, roll the tongue roughly into a half pipe-ish shape and 'blow' sharply from the diaphragm. Matched with a decent spit consistency this would result in some decent distance!
And a decent clip round the ear if caught by a teacher doing it.

Might be just habit for me but I do end up with lots of snot when excersising hard, if I don`t get shot of it it will end up down my face. Not a good look neither  Now if I was in the gym I doubt very much i would be jettising snot anywhere and more likely to blow into a tissue. Don`t do it when in company on the bike or I drift off to the back of the group and do it there. It is a filthy habit but in some cases you have no choice.

No, as others have already mentioned, sometimes the buildup of mucus in the nose and fluid in the mouth, particularly on cold mornings, is such that you must expel it, because swallowing is just unhealthy. So long as you consider others when doing it, I see no problem with blowing my nose or spitting during a ride. I used to try using tissues, but found that on some rides, I'd be stopping every 10 minutes or less to use them, and used a lot of tissues, so it just wasn't practical.
