I'm not a big spender really. No matter what I want, I will always try and find a cut price way of achieving it. When I buy a bike or a car, I will probably end up with a basket case and will try and turn it into something useful. Half the fun for me is being able to take something other people say is a heap of junk and make it into something useable. It beats watching Eastenders in the evenings IMO. It's not that I'm particularily tight fisted, I just like to appreciate my handiwork, and if I have saved money along the way, all the better.

I would say that I am matirialisatic for the same reasons, I love good design. I love objects that are well thought out and made but they don't have to be expensive. They just have to be perfect for the job.

I would be the same, that's why those evil people at Hope keep extorting money out of me;)

I think it all depends on if you have a famine mentality or an abundance mentality. Me, I've always taken the view that money was made round to go round and I have never given it a second's thought. If I took the time to think about it, I'd probably conclude that I've thrown more away than some will ever have but I paid my mortgage off at 48 without ever scrimping or saving anything so must have been doing something right. I believe in the old Zen philosophy that if you hoard money, you cause a blockage in its natural flow and consequently it will never come back round to you. So ner!

I haven't bought anything bike-related for ages now, and can't think of anything big I would want. I might be buying a house later this year though! For the first time...

They'll probably pay you to take a house by the end of the year!

I've just purchased (from a reputable shop) on eBay a 13-26t 10 speed cassette and chain, both Campy Centaur, cost me £67, which I paid for using the motor mileage money I got paid for attending a first aid course, this week. So it actually didn't cost me anything.
The sort of spending I really like.

I generally tie myself in (il)logical knots trying to justify some purchases - e.g. 'I saved money buying that part last week and I didn't have a coffee or lunch when I could have and I haven't taken a holiday for a while so that means I can buy a new lens' - erm, no, really it doesn't.

That's very true... well it won't be until around then anyway. I'm not sure if it's quite the same situation in Canada but in any case, the prices of houses were never as insanely stupidly high as in the UK. We want something interestng to restore / convert or land to build, or possibly even get a group together for co-housing... so we might end up taking longer to look and plan.

RT - that sounds great... good for you. I hope you have many happy years there.

I have lost everything twice, I was skint for most of my adult life, now, at 47 I have money for the first time and boy do I like spending it, it has no other purpose, after all, I am no happier (or unhappier) than when I was bare arsed.

The wanting is nearly always better than the getting;)

How does that work? I'm at an age/time of service, where I could do the same, but still have 7 years of Mortgage to pay.

I've been thinking of buying a new mobile phone recently, so I can combine my phone, MP3 player and camera into one unit.
Quite a sensible thing to get....but I've already got a phone which works (sort of), I've got a MP3 player and I've got a camera....so I still haven't bought a new phone after 3 weeks of thinking about it.

You might want to think about the limitations of this. My son has one of them there i-phones which looks fantastic but he has identified a big drawback with what should be a combined unit; he can't use it as an MP3 while he's out running or cycling, especially in wet weather! I can use my i-pod at any time as it's small and I have a condom-thing for it to keep the rain, sweat and cold off. The i-phone is larger, much more expensive (so more a target for thieves and ner-do-wells) and I certainly wouldn't like to have it ruined by rain or sweat when out running or in the gym.

I'm going to keep it olde school; phone as a phone and i-pod as an i-pod. Just as it's been since time immemorial!
