A feeling of smug superiority over motorists (c'mon, we all do, just a little bit at least)
Hard not to isn't it? Especially in the summer when it's so pleasant to be out on the bike; their choice of transport literally being the worst for themselves and everyone / everything around them; ours being the direct opposite.

While granted not everyone can cycle in preference to taking the car, seeing those who've chosen to sit in traffic for cumulatively days of their working year does make them look pretty bloody stupid.

My commute isn't the shortest possible option, but the nicest.
In spring and autumn the sunrise is great, I can see animals like silver herons and pheasants, deer and hares, kestrels and storks and I can stop anywhere to take a photograph.

John's got brewer's droop
He gets intimidated by the dirty pigeons
They love a bit of him

Who's that gut lord marching
You should cut down on your pork life mate
Get some exercise
All the people
So many people
And they all go hand-in-hand
Hand-in-hand through their parklife
Know what I mean?
I get up when I want
Except on Wednesdays
When I get rudely awakened by the dustmen

I put my trousers on, have a cup of tea
And I think about leaving the house

I feed the pigeons, I sometimes feed the sparrows too
It gives me a sense of enormous well-being

And then I'm happy for the rest of the day
Safe in the knowledge there will always be
A bit of my heart devoted to it
All the people
So many people
And they all go hand-in-hand
Hand-in-hand through their parklife

Hurtling downhill through the woods, and launching off a natural ramp. Getting a snakebite as you forgot you had top peak panniers mounted to seat post of your mtn bike. Repeating same mistake a month later.

Overtaking a four wheel drive vehicle in the snowy country lanes as your tyres stuck like Velcro to the snow.

Watching murmurations of starlings above, as you ride into the dawn or the sunset.

Looking at the complex ice formations on the fences

Riding single track with badgers running along side

Owls flying along side you in the darkness

Turning front light off under a full moon, because it’s so bright

Getting to work and being so cold, you spend 10 mins in shower just getting warm. But you feel alive!

Extending your commute because you’re enjoying it so much.

The way the cycle commute home would allow me to shred any work stresses and arrive home with a refreshed mind and body.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Commuting home through the lanes at 2am used to bring me sights that others would miss. Riding alongside a badger as it trotted along, the owl on the gate post that would eye me warily, the doggers going at it, all enjoyable sights.

When I changed stations and my commute was cut from 18 miles to 10 I was at first a bit aggrieved, but it soon sank in the the bit of the commute I'd lost was the crap part through town and I still had the country lanes to myself at oh my God O'clock.

It's when you have to bunny hop a badger that runs between your wheels when it's pitch black it gets interesting.

I don't have a commute any more, but when I did...
The greenway between Graveley and Willian. Across the fields, away from the traffic.
It's such a nice ride that I'll do it for fun, even now.
