By no means recent but I used to enjoy my 4 mile run into Helensburgh for a 0600 start and then get my “walk” sorted before being off on my post office bike at about 0830. I had a very scattered route which used to take me into the Cairndu Hotel in time for morning coffee in the kitchens. Return home after second delivery at about 1430 when traffic was busier but in those days much lighter than nowadays.

Some how those “you rode to work in that weather today” ie making it there or back when some people thought twice about driving. The sense of achievement on those days, high winds, snow drifts and below -15º make you smile (if your face still works)😂

Last winter i arrived back and couldn’t open the door (hands were brake lever shaped) so had to bang on it with my head to get one of the kids to let me in.

Just being on the bike is more than enough "goodness" for me. On top of that I can choose if I want to go easy or push it. The ins and outs and watching other car drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, truck and bus drivers, predicting what they might do next... and squirrels: those buggers just don't do what you expect!

My walk to work was the same route every day. At one point the terrain meant that I could see the distant Purbeck hills, and so many times I longed to carry on walking all the way to the chain ferry to Studland and climb up the ridge towards Corfe. My job was both physically and mentally demanding at times but my daily walks certainly helped bring a sense of proportion.
Retirement meant I could indeed carry on walking, past the factory down to the ferry then all the way past Old Harry, over Ballard down and into Swanage for a bag of chips followed by a pint before catching the bus home.

I always enjoyed the evening commute best. It was an antidote to all stress.
Highlights included:

Summer
PM: dappled shade though woodland, and extending the ride 20-40 miles. Arriving home with a grin on my face.
AM: fresh, cool air before the heat of the day. Bunnies playing in the fields. Arriving at work alert, awake and feeling alive.

Winter
PM: Gaps in the canopy that revealed the full majesty of the stars & milky way on a crisp, clear, frosty night.

There were no highlights of cycling to work in winter conditions. Exc ept maybe enjoying the sunrise over frosty fields from the warmth of a train.

Just getting on my bike on a daily basis is what I like about my commute.
I've commuted to work and before that, to school, by bike for over 45 years now on and off. It really is a highlight of my day.
In my commuting heyday I was cycle commuting up to 40 miles a day 5 days a week with longer diversions, especially in the summer months. Now I've moved out of SE London to farther afield I am now doing the bike/train/bike commute so the mileage has tumbled. But to be honest, my body is thanking me for it. I'm also very lucky that my morning train is empty.

I do now have a favourite view every morning. On the way to the train station I have to climb a short but quite high hill that has fab views over the Medway. I'll grab a pic of it on a ride one morning.

Forgot to mention those rare tailwind days when it feels effortlessly flying down the road. Drafting a lorry isn't quite the same but also fun. Less keen on the far more frequent headwind days!
