Is there some unwritten rule that states that if you only just missed the lights because of a bicycle in front of you, they don't really count at all and you can floor it and go through at red?

I'm quite sure there is. Just as there is an unwritten rule that allows drivers to jump red lights if they have stopped for an emergency vehicle.

There is a distance that varies depending on your speed on approach to the lights that once past you HAVE to go through - the deal is judging that distance WITH reference to the order of the lights = skill !
