Twice a day when I'm cycling. The showers at work have some of that all-purpose soap/shampoo/bodywash soap which I use on me and my hair. In the shower at home I use Palmolive soap.

No issues with dry skin at all.

I always shower twice, sometimes three times a day if I visit the gym mid day. Never did me any harm, but then I am a greasy old git so have plenty of oils of my own.

so am i

i have no hair on my head and not bothered about doing damage to the rest of it xx(

oh and thanks for the replies guys...just my daughter freakin me out. it's down to her horror stories that i don't drink alcohol at all, i don't eat white bread, don't drink more than 1 coffee a day, don't add sugar to anything, don't eat junk food, don't eat sugary foods, eat more fruit and veg. it's also down to her tv programs that i only eat organic chicken and meat, don't use margerine since i saw it being made and farmed fish is less healthy than a big mac (another little treat forbidden!)

yep, shower twice and just use shower gel all over, hair gets two washes.

At 20 miles each way, giving it some welly, I'd also pay particular attention to cleaning, and lubricating, your saddle/nether regions. Personally I would also wear fresh padded shorts for both legs of the commute. It may be overkill but, if you sweat a fair amount, it's too late once a saddle sore is ensconced. I find the big tubs of Udderly Smooth cream to be very good, keep one at work and one at home.

+1 my butt has never been so clean since taking up cycling seriously! Personal hygene is a must. San pants naturally!!!

not always the easiest info to get for a newbie though, plus we tend to be circumspect about asking properly/directly in this area. I actually didn't know how to wear cycle specific clothing correctly, seems obvious now.

Her TV programs? Is she someone we know? A little bit of what you fancy does you absolutely no harm whatsoever (well within reason of course!). My wife isn't on the TV but she is a dietitian, so I get my info from a high authority!

You should be fine - move to a milder soap or one with more moisturising goodies if needed. Or, indeed, invest in some moisturiser... although with the list of 'avoids' you have you might wish to add most moisturisers and soaps!)
Not sure of the water up your end but Manchester's water is lovely and soft so I think it'd be less 'bad' for the skin than (say) London's.

You're going to commute 40miles a day on a Bromton and you're worried about the side effects of showering!
A mate of mine used to commute from Hebden Bridge to Padiham (near Burnley) by bike. It is about 16 miles each way. If he did it every day, he was so tired by the end of the week that he didn't really want to do long rides at the weekends any more. He was standing up most of the day at work, mind, so that didn't help.

I reckon a 40 miles a day commute on a Brompton is going to be a very hard thing to keep up, especially considering that it will involve significant climbing and busy roads. Is that going to be a full 5 days a week Shaun?
