hi all,

do any of you guys shower when you get to work and when you get back home? if so, are there any side effects? i shower everyday but when i start my 40 mile round trip commute i'm going to have to shower twice a day and wondered if this was going to start stripping my skin of the oils? i can't think of any way around it, i'm going to get really sweaty both ways. if i don't shower at one end i will probably end up with the dreaded saddle sores (bin there done that (with a saddle that was hot spotting) and don't want it again).

Side effects? Give over, would you?

Don't use soap, you'll be fine.

Yes, I usually shower twice a day when commuting. I use mild, pH-neutral shampoo / shower gel with the morning shower. When I get home in the evening, I strip off and a few minutes later, when the sweating has pretty much stopped, I have a quick, refreshing shower without shampoo / shower gel.

No side effects so far.

If your commute is long, your face will get quite some exposure to the elements. Some moisturiser for your face may keep your skin from looking too weathered.

just something my daughter mentioned. when she did her a levels she covered something about skin and its nutrients and how they can be stripped leaving the skin vulnerable to itchiness and rashes. i don't know, i was only asking.

I shower twice a day often even if all I do is sit about in my office and dont ride that day, never had any issues that I can attribute to showing lots. It is apparently bad for your hair to wash it so often, not sure about your skin, so maybe just wash your hair with water to remove the sweat but dont bother with shampoo one of your showers?

I know how you feel with people making comments like that, my mum is always telling me off for wearing a wooly hat saying it will ruin my hair because of something to do with hair needing light, It worries me for like half a day then I come back to my initial opinion, I like wearing a hat and I'll be bald by 30 anyway (Im 23 with a receding hairline despite having long hair and all the males I know of in my family have male pattern baldness) so I dont really see point in worrying now.

In your case, you like feeling clean, that probly far outweighs any risk of detrimental effects, you can always change if you notice anything untoward going on.

OMG! sometimes its 3 times a day for me. Quick rinse when I get out bed 2k swim at the WNP shower, cycle in for a night watch shower!

Use less/no soap. It's removes oils, but sweat will be washed away with plain water. Unless I'm actually dirty I only use soap for armpits, crotch and feet. If I was showering for the second time in a day I wouldn't use any soap at all.

I wash my hair (with shampoo) at most every other day, but it's long so this is plenty.

I always shower twice, sometimes three times a day if I visit the gym mid day. Never did me any harm, but then I am a greasy old git so have plenty of oils of my own.

I shower twice a day which can dry my skin out quite a bit if I don't moisturise. I use shower gel for both but only wash my hair in the morning. After each shower/bath I just slather on some body moisturiser (E45) and my skin feels great for it.

yep, shower twice and just use shower gel all over, hair gets two washes.

At 20 miles each way, giving it some welly, I'd also pay particular attention to cleaning, and lubricating, your saddle/nether regions. Personally I would also wear fresh padded shorts for both legs of the commute. It may be overkill but, if you sweat a fair amount, it's too late once a saddle sore is ensconced. I find the big tubs of Udderly Smooth cream to be very good, keep one at work and one at home.

I'm a twice a day man if I cycle into work (on average twice a week), i walk in the other days.

I will have a shower when I get to work and one when I get home - normally only wash my hair with shampoo the once and the other time I just rinse under hot water.

Other 'bits' get shampood !! Can't be doing getting crotch rot !!!

However i do agree with ph neutral face wash and moisturiser for your face every time with it being baked / battered by the elements.

I cycle easy to the station and get the train most of the way in, so I am not tool bad when I get to work. I then cycle all the way home (15 miles) so I am sweaty when I get home, once a day for me. No issues.
I second the point about moisturiser. The cold dry weather that we are having at the moment is terrible, so I moistusrise my face once a day when cycling.

You're going to commute 40miles a day on a Bromton and you're worried about the side effects of showering!

My commutes a lot shorter mileage wise but as it's off-road it takes me about 90mins. Theres been several occations over the last week were i've had a drentching going to and from work. Spending 2mins in the shower is a bit of a none issue when you've just been soaked to the skin for the last hour.

My biggest tip is two pairs of shoes / A spare pair at work. This means you have a dry pair of shoes to ride home in while you leave the others pair stuffed with newpaper under your desk to dry over-night.
